I think a lot of folks are curious to see Edie Falco, former "Mrs Tony Soprano" make it in a new series call "Nurse Jackie."

I know I am.

Naughty Nurse: Television:

The New Yorker

The new Showtime series “Nurse Jackie,” which begins on Monday, June 8th, after the première of the fifth season of “Weeds,” marks the welcome return to TV of Edie Falco, starring as Jackie Peyton, an emergency-room nurse in a New York City hospital. You may remember Falco: she played the wife of a prosperous Italian-American in a long-running HBO drama. Whenever I saw Falco on talk shows during the eight-year run of “The Sopranos,” she was surprisingly ill-humored in response to good-humored questions from the hosts about her fans’ conflation of her with her character Carmela Soprano; she had no interest even in discussing the phenomenon, since, she said, it had nothing to do with her or with the work of acting. That kind of severity can be disappointing when you’re watching someone on a talk show, failing to play along, but it’s also refreshing and may, in fact, say something about the nature of Falco’s talent. Actors have to be willing to burst fans’ bubbles in order to move on; and fans have to let them do it.

Amazingly, as you watch “Nurse Jackie,” even as you’re seeing that familiar face and hearing that familiar tangy voice, your mind does release Falco from the Carmela associations, partly because she brings the same skills to the new role, making Jackie seem just as real as Carmela did. In both shows, Falco has had to convey the heated internal struggles of someone with a strong personality whose role in life—Mob boss’s wife, high-level nurse—requires her to both go along with and find ways to get around the built-in limits of her power. Falco is so good in “Nurse Jackie” that she may have to become annoyed all over again, when talk-show hosts ask her whether fans think she’s an R.N. and want her to take care of them.

I have a vested interest in the entertainment industry.

I'm glad to see ShowTime giving women the opportunity to bring "good" programs to the pay-for-view clientele.

Nurse Jackie, Weeds, Dexter and Tracey Ullman IS television with women
in the driver's seat.

and I REALLY like the fact that ShowTime is FINALLY beating up HBO...

I don't know how "Nurse Jackie" will do, but at least Edie Falco and cast will certainly keep us entertained for the next 12 episodes.

I want to be entertained... tell me a good story and I will watch it.

g-night!

Real-life nurses: Pull plug on 'Jackie'

The New York State Nurses Association wants a DISCLAIMER tacked on to the end of the show, which premiered last night, that says Falco's "Jackie" is an aberration.

"We believe that the public's view of nurses is influenced by TV dramas, and we have yet to see an accurate portrayal of what nurses really do," wrote NYSNA Chief Executive Officer Tina Gerardi in a letter to Showtime

Another portrayal of a drug addled medical professional who'll do whatever they can to get their drugs and routinely treat bosses, equals, and people lower on the totem pole like crap. All the while crusading for their patients.

At least in the last episode, House was dropped off at the psychiatric institution to get help.

when registered nurse Sandy Summers turns on the television this month, she'll look forward to watching a new medical drama. • That's because Summers, who has co-written a book about how media portrayals of nurses may endanger public health, will finally see not one, but two new shows featuring a character she says is missing from most hospital-focused TV series. • A realistic nurse.

"When you have physician characters on most hospital dramas, they spend most of their time doing nursing work," said Summers, 47, whose book, Saving Lives: Why the Media's Portrayal of Nurses Puts Us All at Risk, cites ABC's Grey's Anatomy and Fox's House as particular offenders. "They make people think that nursing doesn't take much skill, and that nursing is mostly about getting stuff for physicians. And when nurses are portrayed as unskilled, we can't get the funding we need to hire them."

I used to do some volunteer work for Ms. Summers when she ran a website that addressed negative portrayals of nursing in the media. That is why I am absolutely gobsmacked at her response to "Nurse Jackie." This surely isn't the same Sandy Summers I knew. I guess I didn't know her at all.

GOOD NEWS!

"Nurse Jackie" on call for second season

Tue Jun 9, 2009 10:14pm EDT

By James Hibberd

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Days after its premiere, the Edie Falco-starring drama "Nurse Jackie" has been picked up for a second season.

Monday night the critically acclaimed show became the most-watched series premiere in Showtime's history. "Jackie" was seen by 1 million viewers, then gathered another 350,000 watchers during its same-night repeat for a total of 1.35 million viewers.

That surpasses the previous same-night series premiere record holder, "Secret Diary of a Call Girl," which opened to about 950,000 viewers in 2008.

In one of its characteristic early pickup moves, Showtime ordered another 13 episodes of "Jackie" based on the overnight ratings.

Dirty Harry, Meet Nurse Jackie: AJN's Editor-in-Chief Emeritus Takes Sneak Peak at First Six Episodes of Showtime Series Off the Charts

http://ajnoffthecharts.wordpress.com/2009/...ries/#more-1259

"I suggest that nurses rally around this series and stop wishing for perfection in any lead nurse character. Diahann Carroll's docile nurse character in Julia in the 1960s wouldn't attract viewers in today's entertainment world. There's not another program that shows nurses as smart, fierce advocates who actually provide nursing care. Sure, I'll cringe when Jackie pops another painkiller or steals from a jerk of a patient and gives the money to the pregnant woman who can't afford a taxi home. But Nurse Jackie isn't perfect, and neither am I. I'm signing up for Nurse Jackie now."
