From what I have read recently, banking cord blood can be a lifesaver for that child in the horrifying event they ever are diagnosed with leukemia or other childhood cancer. It is obviously a perfect match to the child so carries none of the risks of donor cells.
Not necessarily. If the child develops a disease as a result of a genetic flaw, the cord blood is going to carry those same flaws.
There is still a lot of debate about the benefits of storing cord blood. It's a very lucrative business, and some less than scrupulous operators prey upon the fears of vulnerable parents to be. From what I have read, the actual number of cases of children saved with banked cord blood is much lower than anticipated. Most diseases are still able to be treated with more conventional and less costly means. For the parents who could afford the banked blood, I'm sure it was priceless, but for those who can't, is it one more thing to make a mother and father to be feel stressed over?
