I logged on about an hour and 1/2 ago, clicked on "view new posts", and to my great joy and wonderment all the threads had a new added link called "view next unread" that, when clicked took you right to the next post added since you were last there.

OMG what an AWESOME feature!!!!

But now it's suddenly gone again

Turn it back on, PLEASE!

If you click the little orange looking box immediately to the left of any thread title you'll get exactly that. This works everywhere, not just on the view new posts.
