I can only talk about firefox on mac osx, but as a page loads the status bar at the bottom of the browser displays the name of each item on a page as it is loaded. Normally on well-constructed page that loads normally it will flash by too quickly to really see, but when a loading page hits sludge you will see stuff like "waiting for max.lancasteronline.com..." or "loading adsense.google.com/djhfeiejmdm..."
You can also go on your firefox menu bar to "tools > Error console" and you will get a list of any errors that occurred when a page loaded, such as:

On this reply page alone there were like 25 errors, half related to google and the rest stemming from LOL's junky style sheets.
Every time the browser hits a command, reference or declaration in the page source that it can't resolve it slows the page load. In the case of LOL it happens 20-50 times on any given page.
