prezdent bush jr and the repubs have given us a 700 mile long fence along the mexican border..

http://ap.lancasteronline.com/4/bush_immigration

ummm...the border between the united states amd mejico is 2000 miles long so are we to assume the mexicans aren't clever enough to enter along the other 1300 miles where there is no fence?

i am sure al quaeda won't think of that either.

suddenly i don't feel so safe.LOL

Faint echoes of the Berlin Wall perhaps? Just the beginning?

I believe the Berlin Wall was more about keeping folks in, as oppossed to keeping others out.

What were people told while the Berlin Wall was being built? I'm rusty on that part of history... did they tell them that it was so those 'marrauding west berliners' wouldn't be coming over? And then it was too late after it was built? Serious question here.

well at last the commies were smart enough to build a wall the whole way around.not so our fearless leaders.LOL

Join the crowd.

Berlin Wall was about keeping people in, but I don't feel as if I need a wall after what we have been doing, and much of the rest of the world has reacted as it has. Don't feel as "at ease" when traveling overseas as used to. Don't wear a big, proud sign that says"I'm An American." Sorry. So, actual wall not necessary to feel confined.

It is not a fence at all. This is nothing but an election year gimic to make it look like Bush and the Republicans are actually doing something.

First, the funding is $1.2 billion. Estimates for the wall range from $3 to $10 million PER MILE. So at most it would be 100-200 miles. Of course, that's assuming all of the money is actually spent on contruction of a wall.

But the legislation does not require that the money actually be spent building the wall! DHS prefers a high-tech virtual wall that will detect border crossers. IOW, we can watch and count how many cross the border because we do not have enough Border Patrol personnel to round them up.

Based on the perspective of the builder.

I'm proposing a fence or some other sort of barrier between Stevens PA and the rest of the world

Fences make great neighbors....... limits of ownership are respected everywhere in the world. Personally... if your in my house and you were not invited your dead!

Way to go!!! It's a good start!!! We need to keep the illegals out.

To bad a non US company won the contract to build and maintain it.

"To bad a non US company won the contract to build and maintain it."

You mean Haliburton doesn't have a fence company? The Carlyle (sp?) does. As a matter of fact it's in Lancaster's own backyard (the company, not the fence).
Save-the-Land
Good title - fence to nowhere as in, the illegals won't be going anywhere - which is great! I'm glad they are building the fence - what's so bad about keeping out a bunch of illegals? My only regret is the effect it will have on the wildlife in the area. These creatures have the right to roam free - not the illegals.
lee41
The bill only lets Bush use already allocated DHS monies to build the fence - if he really wants to. DHS favors digital surveillance over a physical barrier.

The fence isnt going to do squat . This under funded fiasco is a election year fear tactic used by republicans to try and get votes. The money what little there is could go to better ways of stopping the influx. How about useing it to go after the employers who hire them ? Take away the incentive take away the problem.

That stupid poem on the statue was not part of the installation. Who in their right mind would invite huddled masses? Crazy talk.

Mexico's new prez is now equating the wall with the Berlin Wall. Newsflash: the U.S. and Mexico are not the same country, so saying it is similar to a fence dividing a country are off-base (sorry Harv), unless the Mex prez knows something we don't?

North American Union- google it.

Therein lies the conflict. If republicans were forced to really clamp down on employers then their gardens aren't tended, their houses aren't cleaned, New Wal*marts aren't built - they lose campaign donations.

Yes, they were/are, but even then it was a LEGAL process that was required. NOTHING has changed, except that now millions of uneducated mexicans are crossing into our country illegally, every year, undocumented to boot. Most who come illegally are unemployable at living wages, making babies like rabbits, and dependent on every facet of our welfare/tax system. It's sick that we allow this to continue. It's sick how the politicians put the hispanic vote above this - above YOU and your children - American citizens. Amnesty? Give me a break. Drivers licenses for illegals? Four letter word. A free-ride through our healthcare system? Not even going there.

Sound harsh? Damn straight.

My grandfather moved here form Germany. Imagine if the Germans, Italians, French, etc., immigrating then would have come here with feelings of such entitlement. Imagine if we'd caved to such? Imagine if every sign, every box for every item sold here, had the info in English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, etc.....where does it end? Why was it never acceptable before, but it is now? Why are those who break the law - those who come here ILLEGALLY, not put in jail or deported? Why is everything sold in this country printed with both English and Spanish labels? Why are signs everywhere in the two languages, but not German, French, Italian, the Indian language or Asian languages? Because it's ludicrous, and because their immigrants were respectful of their new land.

Resistance to assimilation was once futile. Understandably.

Somewhere along the way, that all changed, and somewhere along the way, we've seen our country begin a frightening decline toward an existence as a 3rd world nation. Those coming here don't realize it, but they will wind up running from here as well in time - if we don't put a stop to this.

Give those posters a cigar!!!

You want to slow down flow of illegal aliens, go after the factory farms and the manufacturing businesses that employ them. If one of these farmers or businessmen were caught owing taxes or arrested for drugs the government would seize their property and good luck getting it back. But something that has the potential for disaster Bush lets them get away with it. How many terrorists have entered the country unseen in the flood of illegals crossing the US-Mexico border?

A farm or factory owner found harboring illegals should lose everything. His or her property sold off and the proceeds used to enforce border security by hiring more border police and equipping them.

As it is, you and I are subsidizing republican fat-cats with our tax money going to pay for illegals when they become sick or are injured in unsafe work places. It's the same reason republicans are against raising the minimum wage. We get to pay for the health care minimum wage earners can't afford while republican business people get to make big fat profits. They donate some of those profits to the GOP to keep the status-quo.

Bush uses the money to air ads that he will protect you from gays, and the Moron-American segment of the population buys it.

Here's a thought for you republicans, look how much death and distruction Tim McVeigh caused with one truckload of fertilizer and diesel fuel. Think of the massive quantities availble on one of those Imperial Valley lettuce farms. The illegal "pickers" could take over the farm, kill off the owner, build their truck bombs and set out to terrorize America before anybody was the wiser. Sound like an episode of 24? The TV series "The Lone Gunman" had a rouge governmernt agency flying a remote control 757 into the WTC towers. Life can imitate art.
