Have any people heard of excellent guest speakers (or other programs) for a local high school? The topic can be anything relevant to today's youth. I'm looking to bring in a speaker during the PSSA testing for a bunch of the school students who will be essentially in a holding pattern until the end of the test.
Hope
here is my idea for what it's worth, since these are high school students, how about bringing in college students from Millersville or F&M to talk to your students about college life? I know that would have been helpful for me when I was in high school.

How about the boy scouts/ girl scouts? There are some good programs out there for the senior level that many don't bother with because it isn't 'cool' anymore but they can be very useful.

Also, there are always good resources available through DARE and some great speakers can be found there as well.

If nothing else, set up a talent show given by the kids themselves. it would take a little organizing but they'll be very involved if it's something produced by themselves and their peers.

you could also set up a mini-career day and let them talk with local recruiters for colleges, military, different professionals and tech training schools.

You could have an indoor field day and let them compete in sports events, or an intramural tournament or have the ROTC at Millersville come and set up different events for them to participate in.

You could do something for pure fun such as a "Casino", asking local businesses donate items such as walkmans, gas cards, cd/music certificates etc and use fake money then have them bid on the items at the end using the money they won at the casino.

The local theatre group thing could do a presentation of some sort.

Set up discussion groups if you have the classroom space and offer topics affecting today's society such as abortion, politics, homosexuality, Enviromental concerns, Diseases, ect if you have hte staff to supervise and facilitate the discussions. A nice round-table thing where people can really get into discussions to look at some possible solutions to different things affecting us all.

Guest speakers from Penn state, they love the recruiting opportunities, maybe the football or basketball coach.

alumni of the high school who have gone on to be successful sharing their experiences

Saw a guy on the news, I think yesterday, who was a local man that played in a band in the 60's , you could ask for a concert.

Have a battle of the garage bands from the student population

ok, that's all I've got off the top of my head

I don't know what type of students you are trying to keep occupied/entertained. That would make a huge difference in the kind of speaker that you are looking for.

If they are college bound students and Seniors (possibly Juniors) then it might be a great idea to have people from local higher learning institutions come in to talk about the important things to know.

If they are not college bound students, and even more so "troubled" students, you might want to find someone that has gone down that road and turned their life around speak. Someone of course who has had YEARS (meaning more then just 2 or 3) getting their life together. Sometimes kids need someone that is at their level to talk to. Someone who isn't an authority figure to lay it all out. DARE is good. Many times though these people are looked at as those "authority" figures. DARE is run by the police. Call your local NA hotline. They can put you through to the local Public Information chair. They sometimes can find a speaker. If you need info... I got it. smile.gif

Good luck, and let us know how it turns out. I have two children at McCaskey. My daughter is in 11th grade and will be taking the PSSAs. She is so thrilled.

I could speak about their civil rights and how to stand up for them. You could follow me with Sally with session on how to counter sue the school pro se when they try to violate your or your parent's civil rights? What do you think?

Although the later speech might do more good at the elementary school level.
