Wonderfully written LTE - thank you Leroy Boughter for bringing the plight of SDoL schools to the forefront in LNP.

Thank you Daisy for caring about the children in this district.

One focus of government should be on education not private enterprise.  Our children are our future.

Couldn't agree more. I look forward to adopting a classroom or two as well as spreading the message.

Subject: COOL- letter from price school, lancaster, pa. ms kepner's 2nd graders

dear miss daisy,

thank you so much for getting us the sets of K'Nex. we appreciate them a lot. we had many inside recesses because of the weather. the K'Nex kept us busy.
we really enjoy using them. we have built many cool things, like a windmill, a gondola, a record player, a lunar lander, a sand buggy, several vehicles and lots more. they have really helped to show us how things work. some of us have even asked our parents for them for our birthday.
we have had a lot of fun building with K'Nex. as we worked with the K'Nex we learned teamwork, commitment, especially with the windmill.
we also learned problem solving as we worked to figure out why something wasn't working the way it showed it would work and how to read picture directions.
IT wasn't easy, but we were able to think though many problems!
we wanted to thank you for what you did for us so Mrs Kepner and our MILLERSVILLE UNIVERSITY students took pictures of us with our projects. we hope you enjoy these as much as we enjoyed building the many different projects the pictures showed us with!
we can't thank you enough for helping us in so many different ways! please continue to support students every where and remember the School District of Lancaster's motto- TOGETHER WE CAN.

thank you again,

I bet there is no shortage of SPORTS supplies or monies for administration activities.

A serious Redress of Grievances must take place before I give one more dollar!

My school tax bill indicates that the schools have not been orphaned and therefore do not need adopted!

you are right, but if you have any story books to share with others... please pass them on..

that is sharing, not adopting.

Free home computer program grows in Dade

Citibank pledges $750,000 to expand computer literacy program to more students in Miami-Dade schools

BY PETER BAILEY
pbailey@herald.com

When 10-year-old Hector Bouret Jr. surfs the Web, theory is taught through moving images that captivate his mind. Homework is made interesting in cyberspace. Sitting glued to the monitor, Hector clicks into The History Channel, his site of choice while reviewing social studies assignments.
''I can read stories before my teacher assigns them,'' he said. ``So I already know what she´s going to talk about before school
starts.´´
Hector, a fifth-grader at Comstock Elementary School, 2420 NW 18th Ave. in Miami, received the computer through the Citibank FamilyTech program. The initiative is run by The Education Fund, a nonprofit group that provides free computers and Internet service to low-income Miami-Dade County families. Parents get computer training, and students get up-to-date software programs.
Since the program's inception in 1997, Citibank has provided home computers to more than 6,000 students at 13 elementaries in low-income neighborhoods around the county. In addition, more than 450 computers have been placed in classrooms, and about 180 teachers have received
training.
Citibank has donated about $1 million for software, parent and teacher training and fixing up the equipment.
On Tuesday, a host of dignitaries, including Miami Mayor Manny Diaz and Citibank of Florida President Carlos Davila, gathered at West Little River Elementary, 2450 NW 84th St., to announce Citibank's new pledge of $750,000 to expand the program. The goal: to provide computers to as many as 10,000 students.
''Computer proficiency is a reality of the workplace today,'' Davila said. ``If students are computer-proficient, they will be very ahead in the future.´´
Added Diaz: ``We need to give our kids a fighting chance to compete with kids who have computers at home.´´
Diaz and others unloaded 27 computers, monitors and printers that will be given to families of children attending West Little River.
The computers are donated by private companies and refurbished by The Education Fund. Included are a free Internet account and software called Earobics, a reading and writing comprehension program.
While students throughout the district have Internet access at school, the connection fades for some when they arrive home.
''When the children get home, they're missing the Internet access,'' said teacher training coordinator Jennifer Williams.
According to an August 2004 survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation, 66 percent of students from families whose median income was less than $35,000 reported having Internet access at home, compared to 84 percent whose family income was more than $50,000.
For the Bouret family, it's the first time they have had a home
computer.
''It's wonderful. . . . It allows me and my son's teachers to communicate over e-mail,'' Hector Bouret Sr. said. ``At home, it gives Hector a good head start.´´
Since getting the computer last year, Hector has boosted his grades from C's to A's in several classes.
''Doing homework over the Internet is fun because I get to search for different information,'' he said.
For now, he's fixated on U.S. presidents.

''I'm not sure if I like Democrats or Republicans,'' he said.

Arnold, Jeanette
My name is Jeanette Arnold and I teach health and physical education to inner city middle school students. We have a fitness room that serves all 600 students each week. The equipment we currently have has been donated from staff members and other second hand sources. If I was adopted I would purchase new aerobic equipment like treadmills and bicycles.

Housley, Kathy, classroom 301
I'm Kathy Housley, a 7/8 grade math teacher of inquisitive, high energy, middle schoolers. We love technology and use our five old (+9 year) computers whenever we can. We desperately need a printer. Our classroom is buzzing with energetic learners. We love math.

Mays, Larry
I am the Principal here; need fifty American flags with holders for classrooms. This is first of my needs.I need to purchase more instruments for our music program.More students than instruments. I need a computer based program to initiate calls to parents; I will post more if these are met

Montalbano, Kathy, classroom 113
I teach general music and band instruments to talented middle school children in grades 6-8. They love music and have a great sense of rhythm and love to dance and sing. My name is kathy Motalbano and I am new with the district following a retired teacher who left me nothing... not one song book, not one cassette or CD. If adopted, I would buy CD's that correspond to a sample music series I received from a music convention. I would buy reeds, drumsticks, and band lesson books for the talented yountsters who wold get music lessons no where else. There were 10 people in the band last year and now I have 72 aspiring musicians. I have more interested kids than instruments- and many isntruments need repair. For general music I would love to buy song books, rhythm instruments, earphones to listen to a music computer program, mallets for bell playing, and some electronic keyboards. I do have 6 guitars for learning but need stings and I have old Orff instruments with no mallets.

Natividad, Daniel, classroom 211
The school building is located in the downtown area where many of the non-profit organizations are headquatered, thus making our tax revenues low. The students are great kids and really need materials/funds for day to day activities. Our students are intelligent and very diverse, please consider us. Thank you in advance.

Rankin, Jeanne, classroom 101
I am a small learning community facilitator for a 6th grade in an inner city middle school. My room is used primarily for mediations, time outs, and in-school-suspensions. It is also used for a group called P.R.I.D.E., which stands for Proactively Reaching out to Incoming stuDents at Edward Hand. We hav

Schmalhofer, Laura — Adopted by Nyckle Wijbrandus
My name is Laura Schmalhofer. I teach Math and Science to sixth graders at Edward Hand Middle School in Lancaster, PA. We are considered a small urban school district. A majority of my students are from low income housing areas of Lancaster City and receive free and reduced lunches. I would like to have all 66 of my students participate in a science fair this year. If adopted, I would purchase science fair display boards for the students and two computer printers for the students to print their work and research.

Kensey, Shirley, classroom 104
My name is Shirley Kensey and I teach wonderful city first graders in the School District of Lancaster. I am in need of calculators for math. We currently have about 12 calculators for my class of 25. We also are always in need of books at all levels but especially at the lower level. It would mean a great deal to me to have someone help us out! Thank you so much!

Lacey, Sarah
My name is Sarah Lacey and I teacher in an urban school district in Lancaster, PA. I work with bright enthusiastic first graders who come from diverse backgrounds. We have a gifted program but little to no resources for our struggling readers. If adopted, I would buy reading materials to support those struggling readers and bring them back up to grade level so they are prepared for the challenges of second grade.

Leese, Debra

I am the Principal of Buchanan. This year, I plan to read to each class, and donate the book to the classroom library for children to enjoy again and again. A gift of $500, would enable me to read to classes and donate the books to their rooms. Thank you for considering a Principal as a partner in getting children excited about books. --Debra

Kepner, Peg, classroom 129
My name is Peg Kepner. My 22 students are a bright enthusiastic group of inner city students who have spent too many of their lunch recesses inside this year.To help focus their creative energy and promote problem solving and cooperation, I have challenged them to build different K'Nex projects. The children have taken the challenge and constructed numerous projects with little or no directions, only pictures. We are running out of K'Nex and are need of more advanced kits since they are ready and willing to tackle more difficult projects. If adopted, I would purchase the necessary K'Nex to continue to challenge these bright capable problem solvers in hopes that they will be able to apply these skills later in life.

Marko, Deborah, classroom 5
Our three fifth grade classes have sold several thousand candy bars, enough to pay for two buses and the dormitories at Cape Henlopen State Park. We would love to take the children on the Cape Henlopen/Cape May ferry. It is $6.00 per person and we cannot sell another mountain of candy bars. If someone would adopt us we could take the children on this excursion, one they will never forget.

Reed, Justine, classroom 151
Our classroom is filled with 15 three and four year old children. Our program is designed to create experiences that children may not recieve at home. We are a parent-involvement program. We hold school on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Tuesdays and Thursdays are reserved for home visits with the child and his/her family.

Scott, Traci, classroom 114
My name is Traci Scott and I teach inner city kindergarten. My class is doing quite well on district assessments, and we have 90% of our children achieving or exceeding the standard. I have been teaching here for 17 years. If adopted, I would buy math manipulatives for my classroom. The children are practicing counting and they need some new materials. I could use unifix cubes, some counting bears, and some of the other newer materials out there. We have used the things we have, and parts have been lost over the years. Thank you for your consideration!

Quanta Computer Inc. to Manufacture $100 Laptop

December 13, 2005—Cambridge, Massachusetts—The One Laptop per Child (OLPC) board of directors today announced that Quanta Computer Inc. of Taiwan was chosen as the original design manufacturer (ODM) for the $100 laptop project. The decision was made after the board reviewed bids from several possible manufacturing companies.

In announcing the selection of Quanta, OLPC Chairman Nicholas Negroponte said, "Any previous doubt that a very-low-cost laptop could be made for education in the developing world has just gone away." Quanta has agreed to devote significant engineering resources from the Quanta Research Institute (QRI) in Q1 and Q2, 2006, with a target of bringing the product to market in Q4. The launch of 5-15 million units will be both in large-scale pilot projects in seven culturally diverse countries (China, India, Brazil, Argentina, Egypt, Nigeria, and Thailand), with one million units in each of these countries, and an additional modest allocation of machines to seed developer communities in a number of other selected countries. A commercial version of the machine will be explored in parallel.

"Quanta would like to contribute its industry-leading laptop technologies to the future success of the project, in hope of affording children worldwide with opportunities not only to close the 'digital divide,' but also to bridge the 'knowledge divide.' This project signifies a new stage and scale for the laptop industry by including those children never before considered to be laptop users," said Quanta founder and chairman, Barry Lam.

One Laptop per Child (OLPC) is a Delaware-based, non-profit organization created by Nicholas Negroponte and other faculty members from the MIT Media Lab to design, manufacture, and distribute laptops that are sufficiently inexpensive to provide every child in the world access to knowledge and modern forms of education. The laptops will be sold to governments and issued to children by schools on a basis of one laptop per child. These machines will be rugged, Linux-based, and so energy efficient that hand-cranking alone can generate sufficient power for operation. Mesh networking will give many machines Internet access from one connection. The pricing goal will start near $100 and then steadily decrease. The corporate members are Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Brightstar, Google, News Corporation, Nortel, and Red Hat.

Quanta Computer Inc. was founded in 1988 in Taiwan. With over US $10 billion in sales, the company is a leading provider of technology products and solutions to Fortune 500 companies, including Dell, HP, and IBM. Quanta has the distinction of being the world's largest manufacturer of laptop PCs. The company also provides a full array of mobile phones, LCD TVs, and servers and storage products.

With dedication to technological innovation and education, Chairman Barry Lam launched a new US $200 million R&D center, Quanta R&D Complex (QRDC), in Taiwan. The facility, which opened in Q3 of 2005, has 2.2 million square feet of floor space, and the capacity to house up to 7,000 engineers.

Please note that the $100 laptops—not yet in production—will not be available for sale. The laptops will only be distributed to schools directly through large government initiatives.

The MIT Media Lab has launched a new research initiative to develop a $100 laptop—a technology that could revolutionize how we educate the world's children. To achieve this goal, a new, non-profit association, One Laptop per Child (OLPC), has been created. The initiative was first announced by Nicholas Negroponte, Lab chairman and co-founder, at the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland in January 2005.

Mr. David Chichilitti
Adopted by Simon & Schuster

Description: My name is David J. Chichilitti and I teach in the Bristol Borough School District. I am also a alumni of this school district and use this as a motivating factor for my students. I am teaching 7th & 8th Special Education. I choose to teach special needs children because I believe that every child should be afforded an education that will allow them to enter college upon graduation, find a rewarding job,and become productive members of a community. We are a small school district with a limited budget. With your assistance, I would be able to provide them with additional tools that our district cannot afford. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Artz, Kelly, classroom 17
My name is Kelly Artz. I am a first year teacher at an inner city school. I have a wonderful group of bright 3rd grade students. I have purchased many of the supplies for our room, but we could really use things like lower level reading books for students to read.

Gaston, Jamye, classroom 4
My name is Jamye Gaston and I teach a K4 class in inner city Lancaster, Pennsylvania. My class is comprised of 20 four year olds who all have some type of developmental delay (ie. speech, social, etc.) The goal of our program is to bring these children up to speed before they enter kindergarten and fall further behind.

Loughney, Susan — Adopted by John & Melissa Carroll
Hi! My name is Sue and I teach in a city school with a room full of Kindergarten children who LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to read! Mahlandt, Angela
HI! My name is Angi Mahlandt and I am an elementary school counselor for wonderful inner city students in grades K-5. Many of my students come with a need for social skills and coping strategies to be able to make friends and learn despite many personal and family issues at home. If adopted, I would buy small group and classroom materials that teach effective social skills and strategies in a fun way! I would love the opportunity to be able to use some of the exciting hands-on therapy materials I see in catalogs that these children so desperately need. Thank you for considering me - these children deserve the resources that are available to help them succeed and enjoy life!

Mowery, Stephanie
Hi! I am Stephanie Mowery and I absolutely love teaching ART in the city of Lancaster. I have over 400 students a week and receive $100 a year for speciality art supplies. This year I will be able to teach advanced projects to only 3 out of 17 classes. Please help!!!

Sargen, Trista, classroom 7
My name is Trista Sargen and I teach first grade in an urban school district. My priority is to teach first grade students how to read so that they will be on their way to a contributing part of society. Please help me contribute to the future of my kiddos. I love them dearly and you would too if you spent even a moment with them. We would love to meet you!!!

--Debra
