Support Our Mission » Donate Now or Make An Adoption September 29, 2006
How the Program Works
1 A classroom is selected
For each classroom you adopt, you make a $500 donation. We direct your gift either to a classroom of your choice, or, if you have no preference, an underserved classroom near you.
2 100% of your donation given to classroom
A merchandise credit of $500 (your entire donation) is established
for the classroom you adopted.
3 Teacher orders classroom supplies
Teacher selects and orders resources
to enrich the classroom.
4 Itemized invoice
We send you an itemized invoice
reflecting how your donation was spent.
5 Correspondence and interaction
The teacher and students of your adopted classroom send letters, art work, and email throughout the school year. You may visit the classroom and become as proactive as your schedule permits.
6 Lasting relationship
As you participate in subsequent years, you enjoy the cumulative effect of your efforts with each new class of students, as well as develop a lasting and meaningful relationship with the classroom teacher.
31,396 classrooms need your support.

in loving memory of my mother(lived in lancaster city), i have adopted a classroom.
Mrs. Lenore Charnock, teacher
Adopted by In Memory of Helen Mae Myers
Description: I currently have 21 energetic first grader students in my classroom. Most of them have begun to really love reading and want to read as much as they can.. I do not have enough books to keep them reading and using our computerized testing program. If adopted I would buy more books for my students and other various supplies to support learning.

Daisy, I admire your dedication to this cause; it's inspiring! And I wanted to share something I just spotted in the recent Clipper Magazine in case there's someone you can pass this information along to (or another poster who has similar connections). Apparently, Turkey Hill has a program called "Moo Money" where your school, community group or non-profit organization can collect 500 Turkey Hill lids and turn them in for money (it's 5 cents a lid on a regular basis, but there's a coupon in the Clipper that triples this to $75 if you send it in with the 500 lids). There's no limit to how much money can be raised, from what I saw on the website. For more information, you can call 1-866-569-MILK (6455) or visit
http://www.turkeyhillstores.com/community/moo-money.asp for more information. I'm going to check into it for our school, too.

Daisy, I noted that on the website info, too, and didn't have a chance yet to investigate further (busy day at home

). I was planning to try to give them a call this week to find out more. If I do get additional information, I will post it here as soon as I can.
If anyone else has had any experience with the program, please share that information. Thanks!

you definitely have to purchase specific products to earn the money to get the gifts/items for your school.
would like to hear more too about the program.

Daisy, I figured that since they talk about sending in the lids. I also figured that over a whole school, many parents would probably already be doing so -- or might alter their brand selection if they knew there was something in it for the kids (like Box Tops for Education). For example, we drink iced tea and lemonade and haven't been that brand loyal. Now, we might be buying Turkey Hill iced tea and lemonade if that qualifies and our school can participate.

HERE IS corporate response to the program. it appears to be COLLECTING CAPS OF milk products only for your school.
answer:
"If you go to www.getmoomoney.com it explains our fundraiser. You collect milk caps from the purchase of milk at Turkey Hill Minit Markets and send them in 500 at a time and you get $25.00."
Daisy Lee Myers
Oct 16 2006, 10:39 AM
SO ONE MUST BUY 500 CARTONS OF MILK IN ORDER TO GET $25.00.
that is a lot to purchase, unless, you are already using turkey hill product line. how much is a carton of milk x 500? than you get $25.00.
BeingReal
Oct 16 2006, 09:23 PM
Daisy, it's like the Box Tops for Education on cereal boxes or the Campbell's Soup labels...Most parents are already buying the product anyway (in this case, milk is a commodity whose prices are somewhat regulated by the state) so it's not like you're asking people to buy something they aren't already consuming (unless, of course, the family is allergic to milk products or lactose intolerant). Is Turkey Hill milk all that different than Kreider Farms milk or Clover Hill milk? No, so the switch over is easy as long as the prices are equivalent. All you need is to raise awareness amongst parents of the program, a box to collect the caps in, someone who volunteers to count them and package them to send them in. While $25 isn't a huge amount of money, it's still more than the classroom is getting if they don't participate, right? And maybe some books can be purchased through Amazon.com or whatever for use in the classroom.
Now, all this aside, I still haven't had a chance to look more closely at the program or talk to our teacher about whether the school is aware of the program and/or interested in participating. I'm just explaining why I think this isn't such a bad program to consider if your child's school is on a tight budget. It's like found money with a little bit of effort from some volunteers. Maybe a class would even adopt the project for the year, too, and do flyers to promote the program and count the caps. It's worth thinking over....
Daisy Lee Myers
Oct 16 2006, 09:56 PM
noted
br:
the school district of lancaster etc has a website and a public relations person to send 'moo money' TURKEY HILL project to them.
so, if i bought milk at $1.00 per carton and collected 500 caps than i would receive $25.00 for a classroom. sounds ok, but one needs to get everyone involved.
VOLUME, VOLUME, VOLUME OF A PROJECT.

I know our PTO runs the Boxtops program for our school. Perhaps you could get in touch with the PTO president from your school to see how you might be able to implement the program in your school. It might be easier to go through the PTO, then through a teacher or principal. Just a thought.

That is a good idea, Twinmom. First, tho, I'm going to check to see if our school is involved (I suspect not since I know where the box top and soup label drop-offs are located). Thanks!
And Daisy, if a school (who registers as a new organization before 12/1/06) could get ahold of that coupon I saw in the Clipper (it was on page RS5), that first 500 lids could be worth $75, not $25. The ad also says that you can get more information from your local Turkey Hill, so I wonder if you can drop the lids off there rather than mail them in? Hmm..... More later as I look into this.

Daisy, got a call back from a nice young man from Turkey Hill's Moo Money program. The program is limited to milk products sold through its convenience stores only (a potential drawback). The W-9 is for their tax records; the organizations receiving the funds are still not taxed for those funds if they're not-for-profits (a plus). The program includes mailing packages (UPS, I think) so the lids are shipped postage paid by Turkey Hill; the organization just calls UPS for a pick-up (a plus).
He sent me more information in the mail; I'll let you know if I learn any more once I receive it and read it.

What does it mean to "adopt" a classroom?
By adopting a classroom, you serve as a community partner to a classroom providing financial and moral support to the teacher and students.
Does adopting a classroom "make a difference"?
You bet! By adopting a classroom, you are providing the teacher with additional funds to purchase hands-on learning materials. In addition, by serving as a community partner, you are positively impacting teacher morale. Empirical data supports that these two factors increase opportunity for classroom success.
Is there a donation size requirement?
You may donate any amount you desire, with a minimum of $25 per classroom.
Is my contribution tax deductible?
Yes. Adopt-A-Classroom is a 501©(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization. All contributions are tax deductible.
Can I adopt more than one classroom?
Yes. You can adopt as many classrooms as you like.
Does Adopt-A-Classroom give the teachers cash?
Adopt-A-Classroom does NOT send CASH to the teachers.
We provide each teacher with an online "e-wallet" account. Your donation is deposited into that online account and the teacher can use the funds with a network of online vendors affiliated with Adopt-A-Classroom.
What may teachers purchase with the donation?
Teachers may use the donated funds to purchase resources such as learning games, books, manipulatives and other materials that help them create an engaging and effective classroom learning environment. Teachers may not use the funds for field trips.
What more is required of me other than making a donation?
Nothing more is required, but we encourage you to support the classroom beyond the donation.
May I visit the classroom?
You may visit the classroom, chaperone field trips, sponsor a career day, and support other activities that you coordinate directly with the teacher.
