Dear Community Affairs Director:
Thank you for your interest in Adopt-A-Classroom. The following is
a brief summary of how
Adopt-A-Classroom works: To adopt a classroom, you simply make a $500 contribution, which we then direct to a specific classroom enabling a teacher to purchase resources that make for a rich and creative learning environment. The program emphasizes accountability and intimacy, providing you biographical information about the classroom and itemized invoices of teachers¹ purchases. Adopt-A-Classroom facilitates communication amongst yourself, your adopted teacher and the students throughout the school year creating a meaningful and heartfelt partnership experience. The result is a truly rewarding experience.
The program was launched, piloted and has been overwhelmingly successful in Miami-Dade County. Now entering into its eighth year, Adopt-A-Classroom will have raised over $2.5 million of direct funds for public school teachers, partnering over 500 businesses (such as Air Jamaica and the Florida Marlins) and individuals with classrooms and has become a nationwide program with classrooms currently adopted in 36 states. To learn more
please visit our website www.adoptaclassroom.com. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at the Adopt-A-Classroom offices at 305.674.4470.
Sincerely,
Rosemary Hegberg

This program does seem simple enough. Daisy, thanks for donating. I know teachers from that school who are grateful. I'm sending the website to my friends who express an interest in donating. I have had many conversations with people who say they want to help schools, but don't know how. Here is one easy way to help.

Adopt-A-Classroom Founder Jamie Rosenberg
Tours Monroe County Schools with Superintendent John Padget
MONROE COUNTY (August 9, 2004) From August 3 through August 5, Adopt-A-Classroom founder and executive director Jamie Rosenberg toured all 15 Monroe County public schools accompanied by Superintendent John Padget. The purpose of the tour was to meet with teachers and classroom sponsors to share in the excitement of the new school year.
Rosenberg was met with words of appreciation and stories of how the program helped students. He also addressed some of the issues that arose last school year. "For me, the favorite part of what I do is to get into the schools and classrooms and meet the teachers," said Rosenberg. Rosenberg quit his job as an attorney in June 1998 to dedicate his life to helping teachers in the classroom.
Last year, the Adopt-A-Classroom Monroe County initiative was a runaway success. Eighty-six percent of all teachers that registered with the Adopt-A-Classroom program were adopted, each getting a community partner and $500 to purchase additional resources in the classroom. By the end of the year, Adopt-A-Classroom facilitated close to $250,000 in donations on behalf of area schools.
Stated Rosenberg, "the Adopt-A-Classroom Monroe County initiative was an overwhelming success, the most successful initiative the program has ever had." So successful was the initiative that other school districts around the country and even Puerto Rico have approached Adopt-A-Classroom to do similar initiatives like the one in Monroe.
Padget, who spearheaded the Adopt-A-Classroom initiative locally, added comments about Adopt-A-Classroom at each school stop. He noted how wonderful the program is in that it is a completely paperless process. In addition, he emphasized the accountability of the program. Adopt-A-Classroom directs 100% of all donations to the classroom, taking 0% out for administration. Each donor receives itemized invoices detailing exactly how the teacher utilized the funds.
Many of the classrooms are already being adopted for the new school year. Some donors renewed at the school visits. Ed Knight renewed his commitment to adopt 20 classrooms with a $10,000 donation; First State Bank renewed its classroom adoption at Key West High School; and Padget himself adopted 13 classrooms with a $6,500 donation.
Rosenberg's and Padget's aspirations are that 100% of all Monroe County classrooms are adopted this school year. To learn how you can adopt a classroom visit www.adoptaclassroom.com or call Adopt-A-Classroom at 877-444-7666.

Classrooms Awaiting Adoption
Arnold, Jeanette
My name is Jeanette Arnold and I teach health and physical education to inner city middle school students. We have a fitness room that serves all 600 students each week. The equipment we currently have has been donated from staff members and other second hand sources. If I was adopted I would purchase new aerobic equipment like treadmills and bicycles.
Housley, Kathy, classroom 301
I'm Kathy Housley, a 7/8 grade math teacher of inquisitive, high energy, middle schoolers. We love technology and use our five old (+9 year) computers whenever we can. We desperately need a printer. Our classroom is buzzing with energetic learners. We love math.
Mays, Larry, principal
I am the Principal here; need fifty American flags with holders for classrooms. This is first of my needs.I need to purchase more instruments for our music program.More students than instruments. I need a computer based program to initiate calls to parents; I will post more if these are met
Montalbano, Kathy, classroom 113
I teach general music and band instruments to talented middle school children in grades 6-8. They love music and have a great sense of rhythm and love to dance and sing. My name is kathy Motalbano and I am new with the district following a retired teacher who left me nothing... not one song book, not one cassette or CD. If adopted, I would buy CD's that correspond to a sample music series I received from a music convention. I would buy reeds, drumsticks, and band lesson books for the talented yountsters who wold get music lessons no where else. There were 10 people in the band last year and now I have 72 aspiring musicians. I have more interested kids than instruments- and many isntruments need repair. For general music I would love to buy song books, rhythm instruments, earphones to listen to a music computer program, mallets for bell playing, and some electronic keyboards. I do have 6 guitars for learning but need stings and I have old Orff instruments with no
mallets.
Mumme, Linda, classroom 206
My name is Linda Mumme and my angels hail from Lancaster Pennsylvania. I know you think of the Amish and beautiful contryside, however we are an inner city school in the midst of all that. Our building is short on funds, I have a computer but no where to print. My students have access to 4 computers in my classroom but we can't use them because I do not have mouse balls. If adopted I would first buy a new mouse for each of my computers and if funds allow a printer for student & my use. Please help us out, it is such a waste to see these computers in my room each day and not be able to use them.
Rankin, Jeanne, classroom 101
I am a small learning community facilitator for a 6th grade in an inner city middle school. My room is used primarily for mediations, time outs, and in-school-suspensions. It is also used for a group called P.R.I.D.E., which stands for Proactively Reaching out to Incoming stuDents at Edward Hand. We have identified students with behavior problems in the elementary schools and are working to help these students have a good year, with a smooth transition into the middle school years. We have no money, so if adopted, we would use the contribution to provide occasional breakfasts for our group, pay for field trips and motivational speakers throughout the year. The group has 30 members now, but that number can grow as we see the need.
Regitz, Cara, classroom 116
My name is Cara Regitz and I teach general music, orchestra, and chorus at the middle school level. When I began teaching here three years ago, we had three students in the orchestra and ten in the chorus. Now there are sixty students in the orchestra and 200 students in the chorus. I am in need of string instruments for my orchestra. If adopted, I would purchase 30 violins, 20 violas, 10 cellos, and 1 bass. Currently, the students are sharing instruments because I do not have enough for each student to have their own instrument to practice at home. Any assistance in this matter would be deeply appreciated.
Schmalhofer, Laura, classroom 114
My name is Laura Schmalhofer. I teach Math and Science to sixth graders at Edward Hand Middle School in Lancaster, PA. We are considered a small urban school district. A majority of my students are from low income housing areas of Lancaster City and receive free and reduced lunches. I would like to have all 66 of my students participate in a science fair this year. If adopted, I would purchase science fair display boards for the students and two computer printers for the students to print their work and research.

This seems like a well intended program, but as a very involved parent with SDoL I can tell you money is okay, but volunteering is much better. There is already plenty of money that is being spent on low value items.
If you really want to help with the district, volunteer to help in a classroom, help the PTO, chaperone a dance, etc.
Throwing money at problems is not always the answer.

AAC is a national NON-PROFIT organization. you adopt a classroom that is lacking educational tools to teach. i just adopted a school in miami that no longer has an ART dept
and a school in lancaster city that needs to expand their LIBRARY to have books to read. YES, I WILL VISIT THE CLASSROOMS THAT I ADOPT TO SEE THAT MY DONATION IS working.
IT IS A GREAT WAY TO GIVE BACK TO TEACHERS and students that lack the educatinal tools to work with..
you can't learn if you lack books, art supplies and chalkboards etc.
PTO is great for what it does and adopt-a-classroom is great for what it does too.
thanks

WHY ADOPT A CLASSROOM ROCKS!
""What excites me most about Adopt-A-Classroom," says Padget, "is the highest level of accountability and user-friendliness that the program brings to individuals and businesses that want to help our schools." Adopt-A-Classroom enables sponsors to adopt classrooms at $500 per classroom. The entire donation goes to the classroom chosen by the donor. If the donor does not choose a classroom, Adopt-A-Classroom will partner the donor with a classroom in close geographic proximity. All donations are tax-deductible.
Each donor is provided a "Certificate of Adoption" with complete biographical information about the adopted classroom and teacher contact information. Classroom sponsors are encouraged to communicate with the teacher and students and visit the classroom during the school year. After the teacher uses the funds, Adopt-A-Classroom sends each donor an itemized report detailing items and prices so the donor can see exactly how the $500 was utilized.
"Many people are not aware that public school teachers spend an average of $800 a year of their own money purchasing resources for their classrooms," states Jamie Rosenberg, Adopt-A-Classroom's Founder and Executive Director. "Monroe County public school teachers may be spending close to half million dollars of their own money each year. This shows the dedication the teachers have for their students."
With Adopt-A-Classroom funds, teachers buy resources that create more engaging and creative classroom curricula. "Students need to be excited about a lesson plan in order to be engaged, " continues Rosenberg. In other districts, teachers have used Adopt-A-Classroom funds for a reading center complete with tape recorder, headsets, books on tape and read-a-long books, interactive geography games, software, books, and other tools and resources that enhance math and reading skills.
"Historically, teachers do not use the funds to buy paper, pencils and scissors," adds Rosenberg. "They are purchasing critical value-added resources in order to improve student achievement and test scores."

MIAMI SUN POST
DEC. 24, 04
BY BRANDON DANE
Local Teachers Still Depend on Private Adopt-a-Classroom Funds
Kathleen "Kat" Cattie, a math and science resources teacher at Fienberg-Fisher Elementary School in Miami Beach, told SunPost that she uses Adopt-a-Classroom funds and her own money to pay for basic items like paper and pencils as well as higher-end items such as microscopes.

It started as an idea to raise private donations from individuals and corporations to provide additional funds to Miami-Dade County public school classrooms.
But since Adopt-a-Classroom's founding by former corporate attorney Jamie Rosenberg in 1997, teachers all over the country are now reaping the benefits of the foundation.
"I became acutely aware of the grave discrepancy between the amount of wealth in corporate America and the lack of resources in our public schools," Rosenberg writes on the foundation's website:
www.adoptaclassroom.com.
The simple concept was modeled after the Adopt-a-Highway program. Adopt-a-Classroom specializes in increasing the level of learning by providing the financial backing for obtaining tangible and intangible educational resources.

Dec 24 2004, 12:44 PM
Teachers spend an average of $800 of their personal money each year to help pay for students' needs like rulers, compasses, notebooks and other school supplies, according to Adopt-a-Classroom. In order to promote equity among classrooms, donors are limited to providing $500 per classroom adopted. All of the money "passes through" directly to the classroom in the form of a credit to several school equipment suppliers. The donor is then sent an itemized statement of how the funds were
spent.
When the organization first started in 1997, the Adopt-a-Classroom program only covered Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Four years later the program went national. "We started expanding nationally when we went electronic," Rosenberg said. Now there are 17,500 classrooms from all over the country posted on www.adoptaclassroom.com.
But while Adopt-a-Classroom has expanded nationally, there are still dire needs in Miami-Dade County. In Miami-Dade, Adopt-a-Classroom works in association with Dade Partners, a conglomeration of over 3,000 businesses, civic organizations and county residents who promote education in their specific communities. "We work in very close cooperation with Dade Partners and support the efforts of each other," Rosenberg said. "All donations have 100% 'pass-through.'"
Cattie teaches kindergarten through sixth grade students at the school as the leader of science and math resources there.
"I try to get things like [Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test] FCAT-based board games and 'hands-on' math and science tools," said Cattie, who has been a Miami-Dade public school teacher for six years. "I [recently] bought microscopes and they were $40 a piece so I only bought three. The money goes fast, but at least it offsets [most of] what I would have spent anyway."
Assistant Principal Maria Zabala said that
Daisy Lee Myers
Dec 24 2004, 12:50 PM
Feinberg-Fisher, which is 87% Hispanic, is a "Title I School," and is defined by the state of Florida as having "a high concentration of students from low-income households." Classroom adoption rate at the school, she said, was approximately 75% on average but had declined slightly this year. "Title I means we receive federal money because many of our students are on free or reduced lunch [programs]," Zabala said. "Many students are the children of recent immigrants, but the socio-economic level of the students shouldn't effect adoption."
Rosenberg said that the probable reason for Fienberg-Fisher's reduced Adopt-a-Classroom rate this year was due to the recent adjustment to the direction of funds. If a local donor did not have a preference, then the funds were directed to one of the county's 39 neediest schools in the "school- improvement zone."
Still, Zabala lauded the Dade Partners and the local community for participating in both tutoring programs and Adopt-a-Classroom. "We get a lot of help from the business community," she said. "[Dade Partners] LNR [Property Corporation], the Wolfsonian Museum, Dairy Queen, the Police Athletic League and the Doubletree Hotel [and others] are very active. The Miami Beach Community Health Center provides healthcare for our students. [The involvement] makes an impact on attendance and behavior." The individual or group adopting a classroom usually forms a relationship with the teacher, Cattie told SunPost, thereby taking a personal interest in the students and returning annually to re-adopt a certain classroom. "It's hardly ever a one-time thing," she said. "It has a positive impact on everyone involved." The problem that the Adopt-a-Classroom program is facing in 2004, Rosenberg said, is not the lack of donors, but the lack of funding for the expansion of the infrastructure of the foundation itself. The foundation expects to raise around $900,000 by June 30, 2005 but the two full-time staff members and the one part-time staff member cannot keep up with the work involved, which includes serving all 50 states and Puerto Rico, Rosenberg stated.
"We get our money through grants and fundraising events," Rosenberg said. "2004 is our best year yet [for Adopt-a-Classroom], but we need a corporate sponsor to help expand because we've grown so fast that we can't keep up."
Rounding out the staff of Adopt-a-Classroom are Program Director Rosemary Hegberg, volunteer Director of Development Rebecca Johnson and part-time staffer Lisa Mandela.

OK Folks,it's time to make a difference. For all those who say this is just throwing money at something, I suggest they read the info at the site.
This provides a classroom with REAL,Tangible things like pencils, books, paper, and even paper towels. These are all things that in an ideal world would already be provided by the student's famil;y or the School District.
Since Poverty seems to be a part of the playbook here,we are,as a School District, impoverished. So lets get off our duffs and do something good. Who knows,it might even make YOU feel good.

does the school district of lancaster, pa sponsor field trips?
CARTER MacRae Elementary School

Bennett, Gary, classroom 216
I am Gary Bennett a teacher in an inner city elementary school. Due to
budget constraints I have not been able to take my 4th grade students to
the local planetarium as I have for the past three years. This trip
would be a wonderful culmination to our astronomy studies. This morning she emailed again to say that she found a sponsor for these kids. Instead of a woman in Florida advocating for these situations it should be the citizens and SDoL advocating. There are individuals in Lancaster who could put forth the dinero for such educational school trips.

i just got another e-mail from a 5th grade teacher, mr matthews at carter MacRae ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, LANCASTER, PA THAT WANTS TO SEND HIS KIDS TO WASHINGTON DC!
each student needs $300.00.
"We have taken a trip in past years to Washington D.C. We are trying to get the funds to take this trip again with this year?s class. It is an overnight trip and our students will have a once-in-a-lifetime experience as they tour Washington D.C. Students are required to earn $300.00 in Scholar Dollars in order to go on this trip. Dollars are earned in attendance, homework and good grades on assignments. The students are working diligently towards this goal.
We have sent a letter to businesses and celebrities, asking for donations. We wondered if you might pass our letter along to some of the people or organizations you might know who would be willing to give a small donation for this worthy cause.
Thanks again for all that you do for our students.
Sincerely,

LANCASTER COUNTY, PA - There's something magical about a brand new book — the crispness, the aroma, the stories that leap from the pages.Teacher Trudi Smith's fifth-grade class at Carter and MacRae Elementary School in Lancaster felt this enchantment recently while opening boxes filled with 50 new books.
"They were all new titles that we hadn't had in the class," Smith said. "The (kids) were all kind of scrambling around saying, 'I want that one! I want that one!' "
Smith was able to shop for the books through a national Internet program called Adopt A Classroom. Teachers sign up on the Web site, post their wishes and get adopted.
A former Lancaster resident, Daisy Lee Myers, now living in Miami Beach, adopted Smith by donating $500 to Adopt A Classroom. Smith used the $500 to buy books such as "The Wizard of Oz," "The Giver," "The Grey King," and "Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl." "When I told the kids (we were adopted), they were ecstatic," Smith said.
Before the adoption, Smith's class had one shelf of hand-me-down paperbacks that were written for low reading levels. Now, the students have three shelves stuffed with books at the fifth-grade level.
The kids are pleased, and so is Smith.
Helping teachers like Smith was the motive behind the creation of Adopt A Classroom, founder Jamie Rosenberg said from Miami in a telephone interview.
Teachers, he said, spend an average of $800 a year of their own money to buy supplies for their classes.

The nonprofit Adopt A Classroom is based in Miami, but it branches out across the nation. Actress Cameron Diaz, real estate mogul Donald Trump and members of the Florida Marlins have contributed to it. Now it's catching on here in Lancaster County. A number of teachers from the Lancaster City, Cocalico, Manheim Township and Manheim Central school districts are waiting for adoption. Myers also adopted Hand Middle School Principal Larry Mays. Mays used the money to buy a large display board for artwork. "I believe in conserving our resources at no cost to the district," Mays said.
Mays said the Adopt A Classroom process proved to be user friendly. Teachers sign up on the Web site, www.adoptaclassroom.com, post their wish lists and wait for someone to adopt them with a $500 donation. Adopt A Classroom receives the money, and the teachers order from an Adopt a Classroom catalog.
They can buy a range of things including paper, pencils, prizes, books and computer programs.
Adopt A Classroom doesn't keep a slice of the money that flows to the teacher. Instead it sustains itself with fund-raisers and by selling at retail after obtaining discounts from the vendors (such as Scholastic and Staples).
Also, the money never reaches school administrations — a factor behind Myers' decision to give.
There's a wealth of "school corruption throughout the U.S.," Myers wrote in an e-mail. "This is why I like Adopt A Classroom. It's an agreement between donor, teacher and student, not the bureaucrats!" All of the money is tracked, and the donor receives a detailed report of how the money was spent, Rosenberg said.
"No one is getting their fingers on these dollars except the teachers themselves," Rosenberg said.

But the needs in an urban school like Carter and MacRae don't end with the teachers.
Five shelters feed into the school, which neighbors the Water Street Rescue Mission.
Some children arrive for class without coats and school supplies, Smith said. Many of them, she said, suffer with poor vision and need glasses. Teachers hope corporations will start sponsoring schools and their students the way they once did, Smith said. But for now, the $500 has made a difference in her class. "I was just really grateful that I got the $500 because I was able to use it solely on books," Smith said. (Many grants require teachers to spend the money in a number of areas.)
"I was really thankful to Adopt A Classroom for that." © 2004 Lancaster Newspapers

Buckius, Susan, classroom 203
Hello. I teach a fantastic group 4th graders in an inner-city school. I have a very diverse group of learners who are constantly eager to learn more. If adopted, I would purchase books for our library, as well as other materials I can use to enhance our learning environment!
Burkel, Krista, classroom 125
My name is Krista Burkel. I teach hard working, inner city third graders. Many of my students are bilingual and are working hard at becoming fluent English readers. They are especially interested in nonfiction books. If I were adopted, I would buy science and social studies books to satifsy my students newfound curiousity.
Dittman, Cindy, classroom 1
My name is Cindy Dittman and I teach 1st-3rd graders in a full-time special education class. My students are learning disabled, mentally retarded and this year I have 1 autistic student. All of my students come from very low-income homes and most are native Spanish speakers. It is my goal to put together take-home packs of books and activities for my students and their parents to enjoy and learn together.
Good, Amanda, classroom 123
My name is Amanda Good and I teach 2nd grade at an inner-city school. If adopted, I plan to spend the money on the classroom library. Most of my students do not have books provided at home, so they need as much exposure to books as possible in the classroom.
Kelly, Amy, classroom 103
My name is Amy Kelly. I am a first grade teacher at George Washington Elementary School in Lancaster, PA. My students live in a poverty stricken area. They are surrounded by gangs, drugs and violence. My class is extremely motivated and they LOVE coming to school each day. They are very hard working and they want to learn as much as they can. We would greatly benefit from more books in our classroom that they would be also able to check out since most do not have any books or supplies at home. We are also in great need of any types of literacy games and activities to help support our differentiated learning program. I would greatly appreciate any help and support for my children. We would all be extremely grateful and thankful for any kindness extended towards us. We would also love to become penpals with a new friend/s. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Gratefully, Amy Kelly

Benson, Kate, classroom 208
My name is Kate Benson and I teach eager third graders who are part of the largest Spanish-speaking urban school population in Lancaster. They are able learners but come to school with few valuable life experiences (someone who reads to them, books, educational trips etc.)and no supplies.
McCormick, Matthew, classroom 215
My Name is Matthew McCormick. I am new teacher to the District of Lancaster. This is my first year in 4th grade. I would like my classroom to be adopted so that I could buy a classroom library. I have a lot of good readers but few books to go around.
Pipkin, Jennifer, classroom 212
My name is Jennifer Pipkin and I teach in the School District of Lancaster in Pennsylvania. I have a classroom of dual- language fourth grade students striving to learn English. If adopted, I would purchase materials to support my teaching of ELL students - books on level, video and audio books, manipulatives, etc., materials to make my classroom a literature rich environment for the students.
Russell-Heim, Diane, classroom 209
My name is Diane Russell-Heim and I teach a wonderful, respectful group of third grade students in an inner, city school. Some of them come to school from homes with no books in their houses or no one willing to take the time to read to them. I have been doing this for 27 years and the need for classroom supplies never goes away. There is never enough to go around. If adopted, I would buy books or items used daily for instruction like math templates, rulers, highlighters, workbooks, etc. The list could go on forever!

Since my students have dealt with hardships their whole lives, I try to implement that there is a silver lining to every cloud. Please help me to help them realize this. We need art supplies and books for them to enhance their education. We recieve hand me downs, but we need new materials like you would not believe. Eshleman, Danielle, classroom 9
My name is Danielle Eshleman. I teach 3rd grade in a small, underpriveleged area. My students come from varied backgrounds but most have limited exposure to technology, resources, and the world at large. We often have difficulty funding field trips and purchasing classroom resource materials and books. If adopted, I would use the funds to purchase some teaching resources. I would also purchase student copies of good quality literature for my students to read and discuss. Finally, any remaining funds would be used to suppplement our field trip funds so that we are able to visit local historical sites and museums. Thank you for your consideration.
Miller, Bonnie, classroom 15
My name is Bonnie Miller. I team teach with two other teachers. I teach 2 sections of 5th grade math, and 1 section of 6th grade math. I teach my own language arts, but no science or social studies. I wish I had a better selection of non-fiction texts for the students as this genre seems to pose the most problems for them.
Moritz, Kristin, classroom 5
My name is Kristin Moritz. This is my first year in Kindergarten. Our School district just went to an all-day kindergarten program. I LOVE IT! I teach in a low-socio economic area. I would love to have a reading island (Kaplan catalog)and other manipulatives for the students to use (from LakeShore or kaplan). Thank you for your consideration!
Young, Robin, classroom 13
My name is Robin Young and I teach 5th graders in a small urban setting. Columbia is a low working-class community. We are land locked and have no room for expansion. Since our funds are dependent upon taxing land owners we are desperately searching for ways to help keep taxes within reach of all that live here. If you were to adopt my classroom I would use the funds to purchase whole-class simulation kits for American History. The students attending this school have not had the opportunities to acquire background information to bring to the table of education. This hands-on experience can help expand their knowledge base and allow them to truly understand our countries history. Thank you for reading about our classroom's needs.

My name is Peg Kepner. My 22 students are a bright enthusiastic group of inner city students who have spent too many of their lunch recesses inside this year.To help focus their creative energy and promote problem solving and cooperation, I have challenged them to build different K'Nex projects. The children have taken the challenge and constructed numerous projects with little or no directions, only pictures. We are running out of K'Nex and are need of more advanced kits since they are ready and willing to tackle more difficult projects. If adopted, I would purchase the necessary K'Nex to continue to challenge these bright capable problem solvers in hopes that they will be able to apply these skills later in life.

Township Pupils Collect Books For Their City Counterparts
by Rick Hiduk
Pupils of Nitrauer Elementary School, 811 Ashbourne Ave., Lancaster, Manheim Township School District, continued their outreach to children at Carter and MacCrae Elementary School, 251 S. Prince St., Lancaster, with the presentation of two wagon-loads of books on March 2.
"We are very pleased to continue with this initiative that we started last year and wish the students at Carter and MacRae many happy hours of reading," stated Nitrauer vice principal Pricilla Stoner, as the books were presented to Carter and MacRae third-grade teacher Keith
Corrigan.
Nitrauer pupils started collecting the 274 books on Feb. 14, depositing them in the auditorium as they arrived at school each day. The project is one of several ongoing service initiatives conducted by the school and PTO, officials and members of which realize that their city counterparts often face challenges that are not realized in the relative stability of suburbia.
"Our PTO chose to adopt Carter and MacRae because it is a needy city school which is less fortunate than Nitrauer when it comes to the number of trade books for children," explained Nitrauer reading support teacher Deb Edwards. "(Nitrauer) students were asked to donate books that they had outgrown or no longer needed at home."
"We're trying to get the children to get more involved in trying to help each other," added PTO representative Glenda Dornes. "It's nice that they can extend themselves to other children." She noted that the project was designed to lead up to Dr. Seuss' birthday and Read Across America Day to help keep the focus on books and the importance of reading. On March 2, many Nitrauer staff and pupils wore striped stovepipe hats and whiskers to honor Seuss' most popular character, the Cat in the Hat.
Nitrauer fifth-grader Alexa Rose stated, "It was nice to give books to people who don't have as many as we do." She donated two books from the Mary Kate and Ashley series, while fourth-grader Katie Diller contributed a "Little House on the Prairie" book. Third-grader Kirin Naidu had enjoyed reading Dr. Seuss' "There's a Wocket in my Pocket" and was certain that it could be enjoyed again by a young Lancaster reader. Second-grader Ryan Dornes added a rhyming book called "Tiki Tiki Tembo" to a collection that Carter and MacCrae representative Corrigan was happy to receive.
"It puts books in the hands of children," Corrigan said. "A lot of our parents move a lot, and books get left behind at rental properties." The Manheim Township resident had visited the school on previous occasions to retrieve items collected by the Nitrauer pupils, most recently in February when the children donated unused valentines for the Carter and MacRae students to distribute. "It's a wonderful partnership," he added.
"We have a positive relationship with both administration and faculty at the school," Edwards concurred.
Stoner mentioned that Read Across America Day at Nitrauer Elementary School was also celebrated with visits from a number of guest readers, most of whom shared Dr. Seuss stories with their young audiences. Members of Lancaster's Barnstormers baseball team read to second- and fourth-graders. A character from a nearby theme park entertained first-graders, while third-graders enjoyed a visit from a local television newscaster. Nitrauer kindergarten students appreciated a story read to them by a representative of a retail bookstore.

It's a shame that SDoL teachers need to ask for help for basic reading needs.
Education should be the priority. Without education there would not be any future CEO's or business people looking to "make a deal" with citizens of any city.

I would like to make you aware of a fantastic worker who lives
in Miami Beach, Fla. This person is nurse Daisy Lee Myers, who was born and raised in Lancaster City.
Although her home may be in Florida, her heart belongs to
Lancaster and, in particular, to the School District Of Lancaster. This RN has adopted not one but two classrooms through the auspices of Adopt-A-Classroom, which is an organization which returns every dollar you donate to the classroom which you adopt. The Web site for
this program is www.adopt-a-classroom.com. She could have chosen any classroom in the nation, but she chose to adopt right here in the School District of Lancaster, due to the needs of the classrooms. She was a student at Edward Hand, where one classroom is located, and she saw the need at Carter and McRae. So, why am I writing about this nurse who lives in Florida? Because she saw a need which is not being filled by corporate America or corporate Lancaster.
Instead of more money spent on the convention center, could our leaders find $500 for a classroom?
The SDL motto echoes in my ear: "Together we can make a difference."

I am that "LeRoy Boughter" and at that time Mr.Smithgall was and is still being thanked for what he HAS done.
He has helped Tornado Alley, he has helped get other things done in MY past.
I prefer not to have this become a 'slam the Mayor" in this thread.
I have asked the Mayor to sponsor a Classroom and he has stated to me that he would look into doing that.
Due to the C.C and the upcoming Primary it hasn't been at the top of his list.
I will continue to ask him from time to time, how about you, "Chris", would you like to sponsor a classroom? I have pamphlets if you are interested or you can go to the web site.
