If Hamels is going to hang with the big boys, he is going to have to toughen up. I am not even just talking about the games he has lost. You win some, you lose some. But his body language is a tell. He is playing like a Little Leaguer, shoulders slump, a facial reaction when a close call doesn't go his way or he walks someone. Either Charlie or the pitching coach or Cliff Lee need to sit the boy down and have a talk about manning up out there. He telegraphs his own feeling of defeat, and the opposing batters are all over him from that point on like flies on ... well, you know.
And for the record, most of us who are die-hard Phillies fans have been die-hard Phillies fans through all the tough, lean, heart-break years, and we have loved them anyhow. We've known their names and their stats and we might cry in our beer in November, but we are always looking for next year. Call us saps all you want. But if you think that makes us saps, then you aren't really a sports fan, and I pity the team whose hat and t-shirt you wear, cuz it'll change every time someone else wins the Super Bowl or WS.
I have to agree with you about Hamels, and it's not just because I'm not a Phillies fan. It's almost painful to watch, even as a non-fan. You almost want to slap him across the face and say "Snap out of it!"
And for God's sake, he needs to get that hair out of his eyes!
Here's that beer for ya, ceejay:
