Full Version: Christmas Greens

I should preface this with the admission that I am a tree hugger and not a scavenger and am not looking to totally strip a tree bare....

That being said.....does anyone know if there are locations in Lancaster that are public that evergreen cuttings can be taken?

We're making wreaths for all the neighbors on our block this year so need tons of greens.

Just curious. I remember a long time ago that County Park was trimming trees and you could pick up greens.

Or....does anyone know of a very cheap/free place to get greens?

There is the recycling center on Oregon Pike where you could scavage for some. Other than that I have no idea unless you have a friend with some wooded property smile.gif

Kudos to you!!!! I am happy to see some people still use real greens...a renewable resource.

Sorry I don't have any suggestions...other than asking a private landowner for permission to prune their trees for free.

I'm appalled at all of the plastic greens, trees and wreaths I see in the stores these days. This is a very wasteful, costly and environmentally disasterous practice. Just think all of these old plastic trees are going to end up in a landfill someday....and I can't imagine how much energy it would take to produce these cheap things (in China) as well as the waste products generated during production.

Is it public? Where on the Oregon Pike is it? Thanks for the tip!

Sorry, my brain wasn't working properly earlier. wink.gif It's the compost facility north of the city, right before Oregon Dairy. There's a huge pile of yard waste that you might find some greens. Happy Hunting!

Two weeks ago I trimmed my Holly bushes, and the tree out back. Had I known you wanted some greens I would have let you trim them. laugh.gif Anyway, next year you are welcome to whatever gets trimmed off. I did take all the clippings up to the compost facility on Oregon Pike, yes it is public, but one is supposed to a be a township resident to make use of it. I doubt anyone would care if you took stuff, but it gets ground up every 3 or 4 days.

Thanks......I'll keep that in mind for next year. There is this huge abandoned farmhouse on the side road to the new Lowes that has evergreens all around it but it's surrounded by this huge chain link fence....wish I could figure out who owns that property and see if they would let me trim in there.

Call Lancaster Township. They have a facility too on Maple Ave. (kind of behind WGAL/Stonemill Plaza), but they grind theirs up too but don't know how often.

You might also call some of the Tree Services -- Susquehanna, Arborist, Green's, etc. and see if any are trimming around the city. Walked past a big job over by Buchanan Park the other day. They might let you take what you want before throwing them through the chipper.

Try posting on Freecycle. Might find people willing to let you take trimmings from their evergreens.
