WASHINGTON, Oct. 13, 2009 A controversial e-mail message buried by the Bush administration because of its conclusions on global warming surfaced Tuesday, nearly two years after it was first sent to the White House and never opened. The e-mail and the 28-page document attached to it, released Tuesday by the Environmental Protection Agency, show that back in December of 2007 the agency concluded that six gases linked to global warming pose dangers to public welfare, and wanted to take steps to regulate their release from automobiles and the burning of gasoline. The document specifically cites global warming's effects on air quality, agriculture, forestry, water resources and coastal areas as endangering public welfare. That finding was rejected by the Bush White House, which strongly opposed using the Clean Air Act to address climate change and stalled on producing a so-called "endangerment finding" that had been ordered by the Supreme Court in 2007....

That's just the tip of the iceberg.

Seventy six Nobel Prize winning scientists endorsed Obama in a letter critical of the Bush administration's policy of politics trumping science.

QUOTE
During the administration of George W. Bush, vital parts of our country's scientific enterprise have been damaged by stagnant or declining federal support. The government's scientific advisory process has been distorted by political considerations. As a result, our once dominant position in the scientific world has been shaken and our prosperity has been placed at risk. We have lost time critical for the development of new ways to provide energy, treat disease, reverse climate change, strengthen our security, and improve our economy.

We've got the best military hardware money can buy. But in other areas, in many cases the science is rejected for political reasons. We've stood still for 8 years. Let's hope we can catch up.

"Global warming has long been a political sore spot for Bush. During the 2000 campaign, he seemed to doubt that it was a major problem or that human activity contributed to it. "There's differing opinions," he said. "And before we react, I think it's best to have . . . full understanding of what's taking place."

That's GWB code for, "Delete, ignore, deny, . . . "
