Where were the parents of this 2-year old child? Asleep? What responsible parent would allow a toddler to roam by himself to get lost in a cornfield? Children should not be out of view, period! I don't get why so many adults fail to keep a watchful eye over their babies and toddlers and then call for help to report them missing. In my opinion, irresponsible parenting is a form of child abuse, too.

It's a little early to start judging the parents before knowing really ANY facts.
No one here is a perfect parent. My 7 year old daughter got separated from me last year at the Ephrata fair. We were with a large group of people and it took me a few minutes to realize she wasn't with us. She was lost for about 5 minutes while I frantically searched for her. Fortunately, she remembered what I had told her and stayed put until I found her, even though she was terrified. First and last time she ever got lost. Does that make me a horrible parent? |

Some children are escape artists - think Tommy on the Rugrats LOL. You can do everything but put steel bars on the windows and handcuff the child to the bed, and some of them will see what YOU do to open things and they will figure out how to do it themselves. And to accuse the parents of not paying attention while they were asleep is crazy. I have never heard of a parenting book or class telling new parents that they should take turns sleeping so that one parent is watching the child 24 hours a day. I would think there is already enough sleep deprivation involved without that!

I dont care who you are, there is no way in hell that my son is EVER out of my/my families sight. There is no way. If he is up I am up, there is no excuse for having your child get lost in a corn field and waiting for hours to call for help. In my opinion, once they are lost, they are lost, and you need to get the addtional resources looking for them in the same minute, you realize this.
Sometimes I think people have kids, just to have a tax deduction. Some people really aren't responsible for themselves, let alone kids. |

It sounds as the family might have been outside as it got dark and the child wandered into a cornfield and couldn't find his way back out. The houses on this road are surrounded by them. As high and dense as the corn is right now, it wouldn't be hard for a small child to become lost and disoriented, and it wouldn't be easy to find him in the field. I am glad they found him safe and that there was nothing for the water rescue folks to do.

My friend's 2 year old woke up very early in the morning before anyone else, went outside, walked into a neighbors house and turned on the tv. The parents now have a lock on the door high enough that the toddler can't even reach it with a chair. |
