It was a case of cultural differences.
But a stabbing in this country, for whatever reason, is still against the law.

People need to be reminded (especially those with little regard for common sense) that when you reside in another Country, you are under that Country's laws and need to obey them.

Can you imagine how many people could be doing time for every occasion someone curses at someone else? I'm sure the fact that he had no remorse probably also contributed to the 8 - 20 year prison term.

someone should ask Mr. O if he'd rather spend his 8-20yrs in a Turkish prison....my guess is no.

"Ozdemir, now 33, of Pottstown, told Farina through an interpreter on Tuesday that while he admitted to the assault, he objected to the charge of attempted voluntary manslaughter.

"This case is not attempted murder, Ozdemir told Farina. "You don't kill somebody by cutting their arm...if somebody's arm is cut off and they reach the hospital three or four hours later, they can still live."

Of course its not attempted murder. It was attempted voluntary manslaughter....what a jackass. Any volunteers want to test his theory about cutting an arm off and waiting 3-4 hrs to go to the hospital?

If you can't hack a guy up for insulting your kid, what can you hack them up for?

Didn't some of us have a discussion on a thread last week about how peaceful and passive the religion of Islam is and muslims in general?

This guy must not practice anymore?

If he would have had a better lawyer he might have gotten away with it. The article stated the victim was also a Turkish immigrant. In that case if it's a cultural thing wouldn't he have known that by cursing at the baby he was committing a major insult?

cursing at the baby was a lame defense. He stabbed the guy because he owed him money. plain and simple.

Nowhere in the article does it say either way. Statistically, he's probably Muslim, but there certainly is a Christian population in Turkey. Just like not all Americans are Christian, not all Turks are Muslim.

For the record, between my time in Pakistan, and two family members, I know a bunch of Muslims, and none of them have ever committed a violent act of any sort. I'm personally not Muslim, and I disagree with a number of things in Islam, but people are people. Some are violent, no matter what religion.

You're right! He may be of the 1% of the population of Turkey that is not muslim? Yes that is a legit stat., 99% of Turkeys population is muslim.

I just asked a question! Did it seem to you that I was making a generalization?

If it did? You are correct in making that assumption!
