Will it mess up my Mac? I've been hanging on to my old laptop because I need IE to see my payroll/benefits and I was hesitant to put it on my new Mac. Plus, it was the whole idea of feeling like I'd be conceding "defeat" to MS.

Safari has a Develop Menu that may be hidden. Open Safari Preferences, and click the Advanced tab. Then select "Show Develop menu in Menu Bar." The User Agent in the Develop Menu allows you to spoof web sites into thinking you are using IE, when you're really using Safari.

So found out. I'll have to try this. There are some banking things I can't do on my Mac either--something with "Security settings" that makes me have to use the old laptop. Grrr...
I'll get back to you and let you know if this lets me get in to see my paycheck!

Yeehaw!!! It worked! Now I can see my benefits and payroll without having to dust off the old laptop. Now, if I could just get my printer to work, life in cyberworld would be perfect!
I also figured out what I needed to change so I could do what I needed to do with my banking! Who says old dogs can't learn new tricks?

Which AirPort do you have? You may need to reset it to factory defaults, then connect to it with an ethernet cable, then run the Airport Utility. It's very confusing the first couple times you try it. But don't give up. You can do it. Success can be yours!
For AirPort Express:
Restore to factory defaults: switch off Airport Express. Press the reset button. Turn on the Airport Express while keeping the reset button pressed. After about 10 seconds, the LED on the Airport Express will blink four times. Release the reset button and wait for 90 seconds.

Man, I don't think I have a cable that long!

I wish IE would die. Thankfully, I'll be installing a new OS soon one that doesn't continuously expose my CPU to perform mindless zombie tasks like distributed denial of services attacks. Instead, it does other mindless tasks like Talkback.

Whatever. I was really exasperated last night. This is the first real setback I've had, and it has been a doozy. I know it's probably something really simple, too.

Ubuntu 9.04 was released today. It's great.
I recently picked up a used Dell 2400 with a 2.2Ghz P4, 512K RAM, integrated everything, and a dead hard drive for $30 from a friend. I cleaned it up, put in an old 20GB HD I had laying around, and loaded Ubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty Jackalope". Not only do I have lots of hard drive space left, it runs Firefox much faster than my Dell 8400 3.2Ghz P4 with 3MB RAM and a 256MB video card running Windows XP with all updates installed. And TalkBack looks just as good on Firefox running on Ubuntu as it does on Windows (and it even loads faster).
Ubuntu Linux fits on a single CD, in fact you can boot from the CD and run Ubuntu without loading it on your hard drive. Its performance on even a 6 1/2 year old entry-level system is impressive. And it comes with Open Office, which reads and writes Microsoft Word and Excel files almost flawlessly. It even includes a few decent games; many other games and applications can be legally downloaded for free.
The best thing about Ubuntu Linux? It just works. It even has automatic updates!

It also runs a web server for my kid to play with.
