Soaps may indeed be going the way of the dinosaur, but what was done to GL is unforgivable. It was run into the ground, stupid storylines, total disregard for the history of the character and the show, nauseating pairings. This wasn't just because soaps are more costly, it is because someone just didn't give a rat's rear end about loyal viewers who left due to the crap on their tv's.
