| Sweating through tough times By DENNIS LARISON, Business Editor 2009-01-11 00:06:00 Sunday News Amid a steady whir of elliptical trainers and other exercise equipment at Tim's Fitness Center in Lititz, beads of sweat trickle off reddened faces this time of year as steadily as water dropping from the ice-glazed tree limbs outside. |

Universal is the de facto rec center.

CV's rec center is up for sheriff sale. Maybe you could buy that one.

Or perhaps those who enjoyed the CV rec center could enjoy the MT center once it is built?

It would be nice, but there are plenty of private fitness clubs that offer reasonable memberships with great facilities. Today's high schools and middle schools have fabulous facilities as well. Townships are not mandated to provide recreation centers and aren't in the business of running rec centers (IMO). Municipalities have enough trouble providing basic services like roads, police service and open space.
Ever wonder why taxes are so high....it's government providing services they can't manage effeciently. There was a time when all Townships really worried about were building and maintaining roads (snow plowing, etc). Even police service was provided by the State Police.

I respect your opinion, I just disagree.
MT is a great place and I just feel that a township rec center would be of value for the residents of the township.
In my opinion, seniors on a fixed income deserve a place where they can go to exercise. I have never felt that working out and exercising should be something that is reserved only for those with the discretionary income to afford such amenities.

You say “Manheim Township” what or whom are you referring to? The very small percentage of the population that would use the CC?
Private enterprise, (Universal) currently exists why would tax payers spend tax money to compete and defeat a tax paying enterprise so they could end up with the same service?
How about people paying for what they use and not getting others to pay for things they don’t use.

That’s a load of socialistic crap, if the elderly want exercise let them walk around Park City or all of Twp’s parks during good weather. . My 85 year old father uses about $50 worth of used equipment he pick up here and there he wouldn’t go to a CC if it was right next door. So we build a CC so the poor elderly can exercise where does the concept to supply the poor, (those that don’t reach a certain income level) with not just the necessities but other things they don’t have but according to you they should have end?

I am referring to the community as a whole. Where did I say anything about people not paying? The twp rec center would be fee based, just like the Overlook pool.
Concerning private enterprise - I consider myself to be fan of the free market. That being said, obesity is a major problem in this country and something must be done. I just do not feel that the private sector has adequately provided for the country's health needs and I believe community rec centers are a great, cost effective way to get people active.
Great argument - send them to Park City.
What is a CC?

I would say that exercise fitness is a Majorly underconsumed good- with huge public welfare (in the economic sense of the word) implications, not to mention the private deprivation of poor health.
My YMCA membership is now provided by my health insurance, with the caveat that if I don't USE it, I LOOSE it- I simply swipe my id to enter thru a turnstile, or get scanned in Lancaster.
So, the money isn't "wasted".
Again, we have to start thinking as a SOCIETY, for better or worse, you will be paying one way or another, why not pay up front, keep people healthy, educated, and out of prisons, ect!!

In most references it is cubic centimeter, in this thread I believe he is referring to Community (CIVIC) Center
