Easy preventive measure:
One box 20-Mule Team Borax
One box confectioners sugar
Mix the two together.
Spread 1-2" wide around the outside of your house.
Ants are attracted to the sugar, eat, and the borax kills them.
Non-toxic to kids and pets. It has always worked for us.

Another inexpensive and green solution is to put a small pile of cornmeal near any ant nests. They'll fill up on it and not eat anything else, causing them to die of starvation since corn has no nutrtional value. It works great with the additional benefit of not spreading poisons in the enviroment.
Nobody has fun like people.
