Will be interesting to see what happens. Guessing just a fine but what really matters is no license for 10 years. They are trying to pass laws in Ohio to stop the dog sales going on there. PA it is already illegal. Following from an article on North Penn Puppy Mill Watch.

If convicted of the summary offenses, breeders would be subject to up to 90 days in jail and fines of up to $750. Regardless of the court penalty, conviction would provide grounds for revoking kennel licenses, Smith said.

"If we get one conviction, that person can't have a license in Pennsylvania for 10 years, and that could help hundreds of dogs in their kennel," Smith said, adding that he hoped the cases sent a message to other commercial breeders to take better care of animals.

Bill Smith asserts that they used the auction to reduce the number of dogs in their possession before the new law took effect, and yet they are being prosecuted under the new law?

Article 1, Section 9 of the US Constitution prohibits that.

The dogs are now in Main Line shelters, according to the article. If possession of a dog which shows signs of having been mistreated constitutions animal cruelty, then those shelters are equally guilty, aren't they?

I predict that the breeders are going to be acquitted. This isn't about protecting animals, because in order to shut down the facilities, they have to get convictions, and that obviously isn't going to happen.

This is just a stunt to get headlines and donations. Those animals deserve better.

Its hard to ascertain whether you are ever in the court for a dog's life based on your posts...which always find the negative with people trying to better the lives of animals. You may continually post your anguish over the Humane League and thats not enough. Now you start in on the rescue groups. No one just cannot do better than you, can they?

Harl, this is a test case. Just the beginning. It was their chance to get proof of how bad these animals lives are. Big part you need to focus on is if these mills are shut down where do the dogs go that have been living in cages for years. Bill Smith was responsible for getting puppy mills on Oprah. Was a turning point. Really need to work together. Locally we have United Against Puppy Mills. Could use your help.

Haven't the animal rights activists just sentenced a whole bunch of dogs to death with this move? If you have a dog with peridontal disease or a birth defect that you've kept back as breeding stock you can never sell that dog. He has to die.

60+ lambs were slaughtered down the road from me for some religious holiday, made their little children stand and watch!!! I think this might tip the scale at cruel, too.

I look at dogs living their lives in a cage for their entire life in extreme heat and cold with disease and many painful conditions. I would rather see an animal die then live in these conditions. Care about them that much.

One of the people charged was Nathan Myers. He's one of the leaders of the "Pa. Purebred Breeders Association" , the puppy mill group who has Rep. Denlinger and Senator Brubaker in thier pocket. They are also wealthy enough to afford lobbyist. I'm sure Nathan Myers will have the best lawyer money can buy. He has a huge amount of dogs. If they nail him and prevent him from having a kennel license they will have scored a huge coup. On the other hand, he'll probably move out of state and re-start his kennel of horrors.

Curiosity here:

What is so appealing about opening a puppy mill? Is the money that great?

It used to be but they're in the process of changing all that. Soon only the wealthy will be able to afford a puppy.
