Route 222 work takes wrong turn
By Gil Smart

Sunday News

For the past two months, Phil Shober's commute has been a nightmare.
Traveling Route 222 between his home in Reinholds and his job in Lancaster, he's endured backups that lasted as long as an hour and a half, with traffic down to one lane in each direction.

Absolutely ridiculous. If the "authorities" didn't see this one coming, it just goes to show you how skewed things are in Harrisburg. Any Denver, Ephrata, Brownstown, etc. native could have told them this is exactly what would happen (including the outrage at the idiocy). Did they make any plans to deal with it? Evidently not. They sure better get the lack of organization and alternatives cared for before Spring or 2010 is gonna be a loooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnggggggg year.

The entire job was rushed and no thought was given to the effect on motorists, just as everyone, except the PennDot apologists, already knew.

This was a "cover your azz" piece if I ever saw one. "The Stimulus Project made me do it! The Stimulus Project made me do it". Typical Harrisburg BS. Everyone's fault but thier own poor management. There was no reason reduce to one lane so many miles BEFORE the working area and between them. What. they think people are to stupid to change lanes more than onece?

The Route 222 project, originally planned for next spring, was close to "shovel-ready" when the stimulus package was approved in February. "We were able to take this job and move it up," said Penny, but "we probably could have taken a closer look at how it would affect people," and at alternatives to minimize disruptions.

It wasn’t the stimulus package….it was the rush to take advantage of the stimulus package.

Let me recap for you: the stimulus caused the rush, the rush caused the poor highway construction policy, therefore the stimulus caused the poor highway construction policy.

It was all about the rush for the money!

sorry to hear that soooo many people have the WHINE FLU. "road work is road work" if people can't find alternate roads around 222; they should buy a road map. i don't remember people complaining when west 283 to harriburg was being re-done. we all found different ways to travel. usually these types of people are the ones who can't leave to go anywhere early or they'll be the ones complaining when their vehicles cost alot of money for damage done by roads that weren't taken care of. my advice is to look for alternate routes & let them get their work done!

jlwindle:
It'd be nice if the turnpike paralleled 222, but it doesn't (the alternative in the 283 case). 272 isn't an alternative since it's as backed up as 222 (and more so now). No, the fault isn't the motorists', it's the disorganization and lack of planning on PennDOT's part. We're all doin' the best we can to find alternatives, but alternative routes in this part of the county just weren't made for 20,000+ (30,000+?) cars per day. Sure hope HBG gets this figured out ('course they didn't ask any of us -- HMMMMMM).

You are absolutely right, Traffic is so backed up now on alterative routes. It's so terrible !

Here's a great idea-- if you are bank vice president, MOVE CLOSER TO WORK!!!! There are some beautiful areas close by the city that could easily be afforded by someone in his position! We middle-class schmucks have to live wherever we can afford, but a corporate vice president can live wherever he wants. The close-in suburbs are an ideal place for him, he'd cut his commute to 10 minutes.

272 is at a crawl; 501 is a snail's pace; 23 is a joke; let's see, did I miss any other alternative routes? If you knew anything at all about this construction, you'd know it was almost identical to road de-construction that was done a couple of years ago. Long delays, and then nothing to show for it. If anything, the road was worse after PENN-DOT was through with it.

Plenty of us leave early, take alternative routes, and also take into account the buggies we're going to run into along the way as well. What time would you have us leave to get to work at 0800...0500? It's pretty ridiculous when there's road repair work being done on every alternative.

Horse crap. Route 222 has been under construction for last five to seven years. The section that was closed this year was the exact same section that was closed and repaired several years ago, doing the exact same work.

There are alternative routes and the time is about the same.

Did you read the article? PennDot did a crappy job of planning and the contractor could have got the job done much faster.

PennDot does a crappy job with a lot of things. Do you remember the one year people were stranded on one of the interstates (I believe it was I-83) for three days because of their incompetence in dealing with a snow / ice storm layer? They claimed that they weren't prepared for it when in reality the meteorologists predicted it a number of days back? I won't forget the "8 On Your Side" interview a number of days after that. One of the spokespeople for PennDot answered every question with an "umm..." or an "ah....", like a incompetent moron.

Their decision-making sucks, plain and simple. Rt. 23 during evening rush hour is absolutely terrible, partly due to that route being a detour for the Rt. 222 disaster. That, and there are two red lights in a row around the area of Juke Box and Butter Road that seem to sync at the exact same time, and that causes a horribly long backlog from Butter Road all the way to the Rt. 30 interchange...at 5:00pm at night all the way to nearly 6:00pm. Smart move, PennDot.

I have plenty of examples of PennDot's shear incompetence, but I can wait until winter time when they screw up another plow job.

I can't wait for government to take over health care.
If you think people are pizzed off at a 15 minute delay on Rt222 wait til they get a 15 month delay for an operation.

He's worried that people "may" get a bad attitude about the stimulus plan ?
Where has this guy been ?
Congressional districts that don't exist ?
5 million to create half a dozen new jobs, or to give raises to existing jobs ?

So wait you registered to complain about people complaining? Read the John Lennon avatar post, then reread it. Then try to find a decent alternative route to 222 at say 2am. Then try the same test in rush hour. Then collect the hair off the passanger seat that used to be attache to your head which you were forced to pull out due to the madness.
