"The Humane League will not accept pets from municipalities that do not have a contract with it. The shelter's Web site lists 14 municipalities in the county that did not have contracts in 2009.

Townships with no contract with the League are Bart, Colerain, Conoy, Drumore, East Drumore, Ephrata, Fulton, Leacock, Little Britain, Providence, Rapho, Sadsbury and Salisbury. Ephrata Borough also does not have a contract."

Perhaps Mount Joy could contact representatives of these other municipalities, for ideas?

If the townships don’t pay, then who takes care of the poor animals who didn’t ask to come into this stinken world anyway?

I think the County needs to step up and require everyone to pay their fair share.

Also that ALL animals be spayed and neutered, period! Close down the dang puppy mills, tell the stinken (and I mean that literally) Amish to figure out another way to make $$. Also tell them to get a car. Imagine how may vehicles they would have to buy and what that would mean to the auto industry.

People seem to think that a life, just because it’s an animals, is expendable. And why should it be any different, they let their children run the streets and have NO IDEA where they are 90% of the time.

Kid goes missing, police ask “Who does your child hang out with?” Parents answer “I don’t know their names”.

WTF????

I’m sick and tired of people not living up to problems that they cause! You take in a pet, you keep that pet! I’ve worked hard my whole life. Sometimes two jobs. Never owned a home. But every time I moved, I managed to find a place that would let me have my animals. NEVER EVER have I gotten rid of a pet NEVER!

I was raised with better morals and live up to my responsibilities. I do not dump them on someone else. Oh and I’m almost 50, seen a lot of sh*t in my time.

But have to say this Country is going to h*ll FAST

The Humane League use of bullying and scare tactics has really lowered their image since they started this idea of a per captia tax on the townships. Of course the media has been painting the townships as not being supportive but the truth is that the Humane league contract plan is absurd and can't be justified.

So you are suggesting that we impose a "Humane League Tax" now? LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where does it end? The only thing funnier here would be if you opposed a fire tax and opposed government healthcare. Do you?

We can do better for our strays that pay exorbitant fees to kill them. And since it would cost less, we have little excuse not to.

$4,000 a year for animal control service really doesn't seem all that terrible, I'm sure they are spending that much or more on something else a lot dumber. Its not the humane leagues fault that townships can't budget their own money.

SO....feel free to create an ALTERNATIVE to the Humane League. What I want to know is where all these NO KILL FOSTER homes are gonna be. I can't get someone to foster a cat, much less a dog. Most ppl have a zillion excuses. There really is no such thing as a NO KILL SHELTER anyway. Most NO KILLS are v. discriminating with who they accept. If a dog displays any type of aggression , is gonna be a hard to place adoption they are usually rejected....then where do you think the animal ends up ? A KILL SHELTER! What is also interesting is I've seen you spout against spaying/neutering animals , calling it 'mutilation'! How in the world, pray tell, are YOU going to solve any problems of pet overpopulation when you are against a basic procedure which prevents unwanted litters?

All you ppl groaning...DO SOMETHING.

I also agree w/Donna. This whole area walks on a treadmill w/bricks on its feet. While bytching about Humane league fees there are many backyard breeders, puppy millers.....and ppl bellyache about 'them zealots' who they perceive hold animal life over human life. Get your dang animals spayed, don't use 'moving' or 'new baby' as an excuse.

Its not about that at all. Screw the animals, screw yourselves.

No where in that blog, Harl, does it mention the number of CATS brought to the League . Just dogs. Its cats that create the most population strife in that place.

I know of one guy in Bart Township down the road from me who used to live trap cats and bring them each night to the side kennels at the Humane League..when they used to let you bring your animals in at all hours and help yourself to a cage, put food in a bowl and fill out info. It was the abuse of this that saw its end.

While all you people draw lines in the sand who you feel sorry for and who you don't someone is also drawing a line AROUND YOU.

charming post. Your point about worrying how to heat your home and put gas in your car (you did not mention pay for electricity) are valid points. But it is hard to take you seriously when you post comments like this.

The municipalities are legally required to provide a solution for stray dogs. The Humane League provides that solution for a reasonable fee. Is Mount Joy able to build, maintain, and staff a kennel to deal with the stray dogs for less than the Humane League ? NO ! They're going to do what the other negligent municipalities do, they're going to pass the buck to the county dog officer and all the county wide tax payers are going to have to suppliment they'll lack of responsibility.

Notice some of these same communities have the lowest tax millage and are the ones that use the State Police for coverage.
