"...ELA recommends that North Reservoir become a three-lane street with the right lane restricted to bus traffic, the middle lane for student drop-offs from vehicles and the left lane for through traffic..."

How will a student get from the drop off lane (the middle lane) without confronting buses and through traffic to get to the school?

I so can't wait to see how they figure that nightmare out. I lived over there for three years and it's a terror-that much i can tell you! I wish them luck!

I live near this nightmare also, something desperately needs done. But what about the students that decide to take resident's parking? I have often wondered why there was a crossing guard for when the elementary students go to school but not when the middle / high school students go to school. Those two cops I see parked and talking with regularity every morning at the end of the Chestnut Street extension could probably be offer some assistance.

Why not make the driving rule like it was way back? Seniors only, AND with a parking permit. In school suspension for violators.

Does your school make your students pay for parking permits? Just wondering? My children went to Penn Manor, and had to buy a parking permit every year, and they were assigned parking spaces also. Those permits werent that cheap either. I dont kno much about your school and how much space there is to park. Just making a suggestion.

The problem is not with student drivers so much. It is with parents dropping off their kids and kids who J-walk. I've been through this during the morning rush. If students would just move faster getting out of the cars and if they do choose to J-walk at least run and not act like you are on a bird watching hike it would improve things more then a new road. And you would thing people would know by now, honking your horn only makes a high schooler move slower.

My school district (york county) does exactly the same thing. It is a couple hundred bucks per year for a parking pass.

I face this nightmare everyday in the morning and afternoon. The problem: the parents droping off their kids think they own the street and don't just drop them off, they decide to stop and talk to their kids at that moment. Parents from the Wickersham elementary see that there are cars coming from McCaskey and they always want to be out first. The kids, from both schools, have no respect for vehicles and the danger of walking infront of one just because they think the driver doesn't have any right of way and no-one respects the crossing guard. I understand that parents that work need to get their kids there and have time to get to work but if you leave early enough you can make a difference in time. I have had to change the time I left home in order to get my kid and myself out on time. I think yes, something definitely needs to be done.

Extending Broad St.into the parking lot is the best thing I see in this new plan. That alone should have a big effect on the problem in front of the schools.

Maybe if parents made their kids walk to school, instead of driving them there, there may not be such a big problem.
Then again if little Johnny had to walk he might get some exercise.

That might be an issue for McCaskey students who live in the western half of Lancaster Township.

It is called Victory Field, and it is right across the street from both McCaskey and Wickersham.

There is an interesting story about how Victory Field got its name. When McCaskey was built by the WPA during the 1930s, there was not much more than farmland in the immediate area. During World War II, families were encouraged to plant "Victory Gardens" in order to reduce the demand for vegetables, supposedly allowing for more of a supply for troops overseas. The Lancaster School District (as it was called before it was merged with the Lancaster Township School District) divided the large field across from McCaskey into small plots were Lancaster City residents could plant "Victory Gardens". Consequently, it became known as Victory Field.
