I am taking my cousin out with his new camera on a photography lesson. We want to go to a junkyard or somewhere similar where there are some old cars etc, lying around. Anyone know of a good place? Called Temple Auto Slavage in QUarryville and a not-so-nice guy said he "don't allow pictures" and J&D Auto Salvage north of Manheim only has newer cars.
It doesn't have to be a huge place. Just with couple of old cars or trucks and some neat junk lying around.

There's a place on my way to work that looks like what you are looking for....it's at the Bridgeport intersection where the Weis is....I think they sell cars or repair them but it looks like there is a junkyard behind it through the trees.

You might try Mease's Auto Salvage.

If you don't mind travel, there is a yard full of old rusting hulks, mostly growing into the weeds, in southern York called Lucke's Auto Salvage. Most guests there are pre-'70.

King St heading East past Conestoga View at the bottom of the hill. There is a traffic light with a party rental place on the right and the car place on the left. Weis and Turkey Hill are just past the intersection.

I can't find Lucke's on the internet anywhere. No phone number or any listing at all.
I just looked Mease's up and it looks good too. As long as I have the address I can look these places up on Google Maps' satellite view and see how much good junk they have!

There's a place on 23 (Marietta Pike) between Silver Spring and Kinderhook Road, on the left. Don't know about permission or access.

Also, if you go to Columbia, park at Burger King, right off Rt. 30, walk toward the river, there are a bunch of train cars down there and you can get interesting shots there. I have a friend who did a fashion shoot there, and the contrast between old boxcars, etc. and the slick Madison Ave/Bryant Park models made for great shots!

If all else fails and the junkyards won't let you in, have you thought about Auto Body shops? I think Barton's in Mount Joy is still there. Usually crashed up cars around.

"I can't find Lucke's on the internet anywhere. No phone number or any listing at all." P.S.

235-2866, It's been over a year since I called there...once you see the operation you'll realize why it's not on the net. Earl & Jack's on Marrietta Pike has been closed for years, no cars on the property.

No use calling Lucke's between 12 and 1, lunch. One man show, and what a character. Worthy of film himself.

That's an excellent idea, thanks for the tip. I keep meaning to get out and do some train cars, so maybe we'll add that to the day also. I'd love to see that photo shoot. It's not on the web anywhere is it?

By far and large, Harry's U-Pull-It. However, you probably don't want to drive to Allentown.

Look up any U-Pull-It place that says they have lots of cars, if they're talking acres or hundreds/thousands just make sure it seems like lots.
For what you want to do, I'd say Baughman's in York off Eberts lane. I wouldn't necessarily recommend them for just any part though, it all depends on what you want if they have good stuff or junk.
Anyway, don't tell them you're gonna take photos. Not many will encourage you to do this because you are nothing but a liability and no chance to make any money. If you hurt yourself, you could sue them and they know this. Not that you would, but you could. Where as if they think you might buy something, they're willing to take that risk, so be discreet.

BAD idea. Stay out of RR property. Railroad police do not give warnings, they give citations. And the crews will call you in.

If you want photos of railcars, shoot from the walkway bridge at F&M. Plenty of old cars in daily use (mostly grain), you might get something moving, see the human element (railroaders), and in a year or 2, that part of the yard will be turned into more F&M athletic fields.

Echoes from the past is just North of Manhiem on Rt 72. They have a plethora of old recycled stuff, everything from wood, to old hardware, to old equipment. You can call him at 665 4345, name is Ben Brubaker. I get alot of wood to re-purpose as some of my woodworking projects.

I saw that on the internet and was wondering what it was. I'm getting quite a long list of photo destinations from this thread!

so there's no way to get decent rail shots without pissing someone off? Know where there are any cars that don't run anymore?

You might try the Strasburg Railroad. There might be some sitting around there, or at the museum. It's been too long for me to remember if there were any "in need of rehab" cars there or not.
