Well said.I agree that it is too early to judge his success but can attest to the fact that our last president(along with Rumsfeld and Cheyney)made more enemies in the world than necessary.In fact,rarely could I find someone who didn't wonder about why we kept them in.

As for resources wasted...no doubt on that at all.Have travelled ,lived and or worked in probably 30countries or more and can well see the truth in what you say.

Suppose that should mean me.Hate to disappoint you but I came to Europe on GI Bill and stayed here teaching for Germans ,as well as living with a Sgt.and wife while teaching at a US base(mainly armored units)and then later the US Embassy.
Difference I hope is that I learned something about the world in that time.BTW..if you also want to question others who agree with me ,I have a cousin agent -orange disabled,another who never met his father as his father was killed on a Christmas eve while in army.BTW..the one with agent-orange related disability had a father wounded twice in WWII and despite all of us having served had to listen to people praising people like Cheyney who when asked about his deferments said he had "other priorities in the 60's".
Talk about wastes...much is on this board denying that there are things Americans need that most people already have in such "communist"countries like Switzerland,Germany,UK and virtually all of Europe.

You are right and normally am calm but saw how messed things are first hand...also the 2 years we were back in Lancaster(was also teaching while there).I couldn't believe how naive and misformed many were.Could write abook on that.Promise to try to avoid such outbursts but when I read again that some are poor because they want to ,then I would like them to talk to some I knew ...including several who were in Vietnam and more than paid for a right to speak out.But you are right and all have the right to talk..even nonsense.Good luck.Am getting ready for my November trip to US..including Lancaster.

You are 100% correct. That post was directed at you and that waste of resources comment you made. (Nothing to do with you, your friends or Cheney.) Thats baloney, Americans most certainly do not have the market cornered when it comes to wasting resources.
Some of the reasons Europeans have what we Americans "need" is because of the fact they know the U.S. will rush to there defense and play world cop if needed. Freeing them of putting resources into national defense and allowing them to spend it on social programs.
I've never been to Europe and have no desire to do so you got me. But I have the pleasure of working with european contractors all the time. I am grateful for the experience and what I have learned from them.

I think there are many people who have a certain...mentality. That's probably the politest, most non-judgemental way I can put it. They were born here, never experienced anything outside here, and plan to die here. And that's fine, until that complacency collides with reality.

You don't have to travel overseas to learn what the rest of the world is like. One of the reasons I am such an advocate for kids learning another language, any language, is that it opens your mind up to new ideas and possibilities. You acquire skills you never knew you had. In learning Spanish I learned about so many other things. Getting the opportunity to travel overseas was a life-changing event, as you know from our PM.

Some people are just incurious about the rest of the world. I've really never understood that. My dream would be to learn about other cultures and learn other languages. Getting to know how other people live and think fascinates me.
