(missing) link

A heretofore unknown "creature" has apparently been discovered in Mexico. Numerous stories about this creature surfaced in June of 2009 after it was revealed during the "UFO Conference 2009" in Nevada, USA. The story was not included here because the veracity of the story seemed doubtful.

However, recently the History Channel's MonsterQuest program put the creature's mummified remains under a series of scientific tests. These tests included MRI scans of the creature as well as DNA tests of the creature's skin, bone and hair and the results are surprising (revelations of the DNA tests of the creature can be found at minute marker 6:41.)

According to the initial report, the creature pictured above was captured in a small leghold trap back in 2007 in Mexico. The "creature" was said to be very aggressive and screamed violently. And as can be seen in the photo at top, the creature reportedly had gone so far as to chew off part of its own arm to free itself. According to the story, those who discovered the creature attempted to kill it by placing it in a bucket and submerging it under water. After about 30 minutes they removed it from the bucket, only to discover that it was not only still alive, but thrashing and screaming even more violently than before. According to the reports, only after repeated attempts did they finally manage to drown the creature.
The History channel assembled a team of forensic scientists to examine the creature. After administering multiple tests, forensic investigator, Dr. Angel Gutierrez, told the History channel:

"Here we are facing something terrestrial or something unknown. As a scientist I personally have to say that it probably is a species in evolution or an unknown species."
MonsterQuest reports that DNA testing confirmed Dr. Gutierrez's assessment, saying that the DNA matches no known creature. Geneticist Dr. Elena Abarca (who appears to be rather shaken by the discovery) tells the History channel:

"We analyse the bone and the skin and hair and then we don't have nothing ... and that is a surprise for us. What—what happened, I don't know."

chupacabra is one of my favorite cryptozoology subjects, but i think the pic you included might just be a prop used today by a chief's fan

Nope, it was posted as one of the many "chupacabra" images on Google. This thread made me think of this:

Yours made me think of this:

Many animals will chew off limbs when caught in traps, self-preservation is a very strong instinct, risking limb over life is one aspect of it.

It makes me v. sad that the 'responce' to this creature was not to assist in any way but give in to their fears and go bat azz violent at , killing.

Leghold traps are the worst. I can't begin to tell you the horror stories I have been familiar with including a friend who acquired a cat minus a leg...who was nicknamed LEGHOLD. (found in a trap with most of limb chewed off).

I don't know what the creature is but I wonder more about the 'mystery' of the heart of man who must kill everything they are not familiar with or fear.

Thankfully, no one said it made them think of that god-awful mash-up that Kid Rock is parading around trying to fob off as "music."
