Glenn "lonesome Rhodes" Beck

Ran across an interesting discussion tonight. For some time, Keith Olbermann has referred to fellow broadcaster Glenn "Lonesome Rhodes" Beck. The nickname is a reference to a 1957 film that starred Andy Griffith as an upstart radio broadcaster who becomes highly successful and is given a national television program. It turns out the host is amoral and has particular disdain for his viewers. Rhodes winds up losing his program and is beset by personal tragedy.

It's an obscure reference and several people who saw the film commented online on the eery resemblance of Griffith's brilliant on air portrayal to Beck. Olbermann and others like him are obviously aware that their popularity is not permanent.

One can't know for sure if Olbermann is as respectful of the audience as he appears to be, but I wouldn't have any difficulty believing that Beck is contemptuous of his viewers. The film and the downfall of some highly popular personalities (e.g. Arthur Godfrey) suggest that such attitudes will eventually be revealed with attendant severe damage to the individual.

Peace-loving Muslims

QUOTE

A German's View on Islam, by Paul E. Marek:

A man, whose family was German aristocracy prior to World War II, owned a number of large industries and estates. When asked how many German people were true Nazis, the answer he gave can guide our attitude toward fanaticism. 'Very few people were true Nazis,' he said, 'but many enjoyed the return of German pride, and many more were too busy to care. I was one of those who just thought the Nazis were a bunch of fools. So, the majority just sat back and let it all happen. Then, before we knew it, they owned us, and we had lost control, and the end of the world had come. My family lost everything. I ended up in a concentration camp and the Allies destroyed my factories.'

We are told again and again by 'experts' and 'talking heads' that Islam is the religion of peace and that the vast majority of Muslims just want to live in peace. Although this unqualified assertion may be true, it is entirely irrelevant. It is meaningless fluff, meant to make us feel better, and meant to somehow diminish the spectre of fanatics rampaging across the globe in the name of Islam.

The fact is that the fanatics rule Islam at this moment in history. It is the fanatics who march. It is the fanatics who wage any one of 50 shooting wars worldwide. It is the fanatics who systematically slaughter Christian or tribal groups throughout Africa and are gradually taking over the entire continent in an Islamic wave. It is the fanatics who bomb, behead, murder, or honour-kill. It is the fanatics who take over mosque after mosque. It is the fanatics who zealously spread the stoning and hanging of rape victims and homosexuals. It is the fanatics who teach their young to kill and to become suicide bombers.

The hard, quantifiable fact is that the peaceful majority, the 'silent majority,' is cowed and extraneous. Communist Russia was comprised of Russians who just wanted to live in peace, yet the Russian Communists were responsible for the murder of about 20 million people. The peaceful majority were irrelevant. China's huge population was peaceful as well, but Chinese Communists managed to kill a staggering 70 million people.

The average Japanese individual prior to World War II was not a warmongering sadist. Yet, Japan murdered and slaughtered its way across South East Asia in an orgy of killing that included the systematic murder of 12 million Chinese civilians; most killed by sword, shovel, and bayonet.

And who can forget Rwanda, which collapsed into butchery. Could it not be said that the majority of Rwandans were 'peace loving'?

History lessons are often incredibly simple and blunt, yet for all our powers of reason, we often miss the most basic and uncomplicated of points: Peace-loving Muslims have been made irrelevant by their silence.

Peace-loving Muslims will become our enemy if they don't speak up, because like my friend from Germany, they will awaken one day and find that the fanatics own them, and the end of their world will have begun.

Peace-loving Germans, Japanese, Chinese, Russians, Rwandans, Serbs, Afghans, Iraqis, Palestinians, Somalis, Nigerians, Algerians, and many others have died because the peaceful majority did not speak up until it was too late. As for us who watch it all unfold, we must pay attention to the only group that counts--the fanatics who threaten our way of life.

Pay Scales, Rates, And What Is Fair

Just wanted to start what could be a helpful and interesting thread. Having been self- employed most of my life I really have no idea what typical compensation rates are.

WGAL posted the new Harley contract and it appears that Maintenance electrical/mechanical workers earn $29 per hour this year, which is about $60,000. How does that compare with the typical plumber, accountant, police officer, etc. Obviously there is salary information online at a variety of places, but I know that in for professsion, it is highly inaccurate. Any thoughts from fellow Talkback posters????

thttp://www.wgal.com/download/2009/1120/21676242.pdf

Herbert states: "We've spent the last few decades shoveling money at the rich ... ." But where did this money come from? Answer: the rich. The top 5 percent of taxpayers have provided 50 percent to 60 percent of the income tax receipts in America while the bottom 40 percent paid no income tax at all. It's not surprising, then, that when income tax rates are cut (as President George W.

My brother just sent this to me: Very cool.
Safer and faster than a scooter . . . and affordable.
Made in America, too!

AN OREGON COMPANY CREATES A PLUG-IN MOTORCYCLE FOR GREEN COMMUTERS:

" The Ashland, Oregon-based manufacturer—the same collection of motorheads responsible for bringing the road-rocket Ariel Atom to U.S. shores—have decided to confront the global-warming frenzy with an actual product. A fun and efficient product. One that makes the similarly two-wheeled and battery-powered Segway look like an environmental pocket protector. It's called the Enertia, an electric motorcycle so slick it couldn't be cooler if it were frozen.

On the green front, according to Brammo, this urban transportation tool can reduce a commuter's carbon footprint by 92 percent. But you'd have to get out of that fossil-powered sled and commute every day on the Enertia to see that large of a reduction. But depending on where you live, any reduction to environmental impact couldn't be easier, with perhaps the friendliest motorcycle yet."

http://talkback.lancasteronline.com/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=6313

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/34025300#34025300

http://editorial.autos.msn.com/article.asp...cumentid=434471
http://www.enertiamotors.com/

I really like the BK "Zesty" onion ring dipping sauce. I've tried to copy it, without success.
However, I found a very good facsimile.
Game Day Gourmet Buffalo Ranch Dip.

Tastes nearly the same. I think where I went wrong was assuming BK used Thousand Island or Russian salad dressing as a base. I got really close, but never quite close enough. Also BK has horseradish, Game Day does not, however, the taste is very, very similar. With a 3 month shelf life after opening, you can't go wrong. Unlike DIY stuff that might last two weeks.

Rant Of The Day

Rants of the Day:
This is meant to be comical in nature therefore I have set up some ground rules. Failure to follow these rules automatically classifies you as unwanted poster to this thread. It also means its probably finally time to accept you are a d bag.

Rules:
1. No mentioning of another TB member UNLESS it's in good fun and the person realizes you are joking. If you need to use 10 winky emotioncones to get that point across to the rest of us, please do so. Ex: no mention of others personal lives in a negative, derogatory way.

2. Nothing negative on politics. This isn't a political thread. No conspiracy theories, no "Dems do this" "repubs do that", etc.

3. Nothing negative towards religion. That means any and every religon.

4. Should be something out of your daily life that others could/would find commical and can relate too.

Again, this is meant as a fun, commical thread!
